Why do my neighbors keep their windows open through the dead of winter?

For fresh air. I’m always surprised when people don’t do this. The worst part of summer is when it is too hot and humid outdoors to have fresh air through the open windows.

Our upstairs doesn't heat evenly. The thermostat is in one room but it is usually the coldest because of the ducts. The other rooms are always much warmer so if people in the warmer rooms want it colder they would have to open the windows a little.

In the fifties, it was strongly advised + recommended to sleep w/the windows open.

Fresh air was considered very healthy.

Are your neighbors elderly??

Are they Germans? All of the Germans I know are obsessed with fresh air. They’re not wrong to do it. I sleep best in cold winter air.

Sadly my spouse comes from a culture that is afraid of fresh air so we sleep in a hot cave.
