Based on responses, a smart coach will protect themselves and include a parent on all texts back and forth with kids under the age of 18. Protects the coach, the club, and the kid.
I am a hs coach and I use an app for a group chat but it is purely informational from my end (meeting times, changes to schedules, etc). Our Seniors have been sending their college acceptances lately to share with the group since we are not in season.
My kid is an equestrian. The USEF Safe Sport rules prohibit this. Our trainer has a group chat with my child and I on it. I don't usually chime in, but I see all of the texts.
Having another adult -- either another coach or a parent-- copied on any direct texts/emails between coach and youth athlete has been policy for travel sports clubs for both of our kids (basketball and volleyball). Has always seemed like a sound idea and protects everyone involved, from either inappropriate contact or misinterpretation of contact. Easy to do, and still puts the onus on the kid to be responsible.
