+1 And it still exists today in parts of the world.

Many people do not agree that our founding fathers count as “problematic names”.

But if minorities do agree, they should be listened to

But shouldn't overrule the majority unless there is an egregious error. If the survey was only 30% in favor, it would caution someone to consider addressing the individual issues while also respecting the majority before caving in completely.

I live in FCCPS

1) I don't know how the school board suddenly has the power to dictate diverting tax dollars when the town isn't in favor.
2) George Mason is built and it IS too late to change the name. It's an extra cost not included in the construction loan
3) One of the vocal Mother's is the white parent of an Asian child she describes as skin of color. So I'm not actually sure if any actual African Americans were asked.
4) The very existence of FCCPS is racially driven. People live in the town to stay away from poor people.
5) This is all a farce, a very expensive farce to say welcome to any minority that can afford a $1 million home.

They held off of putting any names on the new construction because of this decision.

The school board does not use public opinion /voted to make decision. Yes of course they have the power. What about IB programs, buying laptops, a thousand other things. Referendums are only needed when it is in the millions like for a new school.

They made it very clear that public opinion is not used in decision making. They should stop with the surveys that pretend to ask for input. They are a waste of everyone’s time.

Changing the name is fine, but one of the four FCC schools is already called TJ. They couldn't think of one other name?!

They told the public that it would cost $100k - 1/10th of the cost of Justice's renaming. So it will be a $1 million lie

Justice cost about $450K to rename, but it’s twice the size of Mason and also wasn’t being rebuilt or renovated at the time it was renamed. The $1M number was a lie circulated by opponents of the name change before the actual expenditures were incurred.

You can debate whether Mason should be renamed but the incremental cost isn’t going to be that significant compared to the other expenses associated with a new HS building.

Are you from central office or are you one of the school board members quickly replying to defend this bad decision? 100k for a name change is significant. It is 100k that could have been spent on something else. Your arguments keep referring to the costs of the new high school. TJ is not a new building.

Neither of the foregoing. I’m just responding to your mischaracterization of the cost of renaming Stuart to Justice.

They should just name them "Falls Church City High School" and "Falls Church City Middle School" and be done with it.

So what would you suggest they do to right that wrong? (Note from above: acquiring a chunk of Fairfax County is not a feasible solution)

Oops. Didn't know the middle school already had an unproblematic name.

FCC could send the county a check for reparations that the county could apply towards the upcoming renovation of Falls Church HS (the retroceded part of the former town of Falls Church is zoned for FCHS).

THIS THIS THIS

I wouldn't live in FCC if you paid me to.

I am thrilled that they do not need to go to school in a building that revered a man who raped a 14 year old girl, had 6 children by her and refused to even free them. It's sickening. I'm thrilled that voices of black people in our community were heard. The board was clear that this is not about historical contributions but about about our values.

Right, your values where you live a city that actively drew its boundaries to keep black people and other minorities out of your city. Go away, everyone knows is virtue signaling and nothing more. You don't care about black people. If you did, you wouldn't live in a racist city. People like you are disgusting.
