I am thrilled that they do not need to go to school in a building that revered a man who raped a 14 year old girl, had 6 children by her and refused to even free them. It's sickening. I'm thrilled that voices of black people in our community were heard. The board was clear that this is not about historical contributions but about about our values.

It was primarily the voices of white people wanting to demonstrate their solidarity without any real sacrifice on FCC's part. Carry on.

+1. Where is the movement to expand the boundaries of FCCPS to include areas districted for Justice HS? Or other low performing schools nearby? That wouldn’t be easy but could arguably help more kids. That’s not happening. It’s much easier to change your name to say you did something.

Huh? A City can't just expand and take County territory, no matter how much it might make sense. That's now how it works.

So they should actually work on undoing that mistake. But how would the city go about doing that? Everyone's up at arms when an apartment is zoned anywhere in NOVA.

Exactly. So we are back to virtue signaling. We are not racist in our segregated community, see we changed the school names.

I was not being serious with that suggestion. My point was that some people in FCC feel so strongly about doing this, but I have not seen the same level of passion about creating programs or doing anything to make a real difference. Changing names or organizing marches in your tiny city does not do anything to foster real change.

They should allow more apartments. Eventually they will get older and will have more mixed incomes.

I'd urge people to watch the video of the meeting and listen to the board members' statements on their decision before making criticism. None of us had to listen to the public testimony and hear from people of color explain how they feel sending their kid to a school named after a slaveholder. Most board members made a distinction between memorials and universities and mandatory public education that kids are required to go to.

I was impressed with the way they handled the issue and gave it serious thought.

And for those that asked why now? The answer is that with a new high school, it is cheaper and easier to change the name now rather than later before all the signage gets built.

Founding Fathers, Great Americans, and Great Virginians. Unfortunate and ridiculous decision. This last set of School Board elections was a big mistake. We had no clue what the true agenda of these people was. It is shocking how far Left the School Board members in Fairfax County are.

Do you contract to post this stuff from abroad?

Falls Church City is not in Fairfax County. The FCPS School Board, for all its weaknesses, has only changed school names that honor Confederates.

The Declaration and Constitution were written by those same slaveholders.

Are these "people of color" leaving the country because their kids have to live under those documents?

The man wasn't being recognized for his contributions to slavery at all. Enough of this madness. None of those people who spoke about their feelings are God in flesh and we do not change society completely every time someone's feelings are hurt. The fact that they "feel bad" when they hear a name tells me there were no real racial issues at that school. Society has got to get away from thinking a word is an attack. If there were real ongoing issues such as actual continuing fights against people of color then I might consider a name change worthwhile.

Hope this means all the work FCC parents will refuse to send their kids to the university founded by Jefferson and the one names after Mason. And JMU too. More spots for my kids.
