If both of YOUR parents worked full-time ...

Some posts assume that being a "latchkey" kid is somehow a terrible thing. I was from the age of 9 or so. My brother and I would go home, watch 30 minutes of tv while eating something, then I would go outside and (gasp) ride my horse in the woods behind the house for a few hours. Alone. Best childhood ever.

My parents did the best they could for us. That makes up for a lot of "outings" or attendance at school plays or whatever crap other people seem to think is so important but we never cared about. Because we still knew we were loved.

Both of my parents worked full-time and for me the most important thing was having dinner together as a family. When I was younger I always wished my mom could come to school parties and the like but that wasn't an option with her job. Now that I am a working mother I will definitely try to make an effort to go to more school events during the day. Other than that I never really noticed that my mom worked but other people's moms stayed home.

My mom was a sahm until I was in first grade, then we were latch key kids. Believe me when I tell you that lots of bad things happen between 3 and 5. Even after they hired a nanny. We were very wild. I will not ever allow my children to live that type of life. We did the family vacations and weekends but it was the daily living that went wrong.
