She doesn’t have transphobia. You missed the point entirely.

Wtf-if I can have a preference for not dating gingers why in the world wouldn’t people be able to have a preference re: type of genitals?

FWIW, I run in very lefty, very queer, circles and have never seen anyone shamed for who they don't date. I have seen people shamed for being jerks about who they don't date, though. So, if you are putting an ad up on a queer dating site, and lead with NO FATTIES, you are going to get pushback. If you just happen to only date super fit women, no one is going to harass you about it.

The point is that leading with exclusionary language is hurtful, where as just having a preference is being human.

I actually have seen shaming on social media about it, though. I realize that’s not real life but there is a vocal minority that feel that way. I absolutely agree no one should be a jerk (and I understand for many people it wouldn’t be an issue traction wise which is great!) but it definitely is a real, not entirely fringe viewpoint. (And I think jkr’s other points are bs.)

Let me push back a little bit: So, how would you suggest that a lesbian say that she’s only interested in biological women? Is there any “non-transphobic or non-a$$hole” way of saying that?

As a cis-woman I know I would consider it a huge betrayal if I met a nan on a dating site specifying that I was interested in men, then I went on a few dates and found out he had a vagina when we were starting to get intimate. That would end the relationship right there because I want to have sex with biological men. It’s a deal breaker.

Can you tell me the correct way for a lesbian to express that sane sentiment? Like the exact words she should use on a dating site?
Thanks!

No, I didn’t. She’s been doing this for years. Her gaslighting post is disingenuous and unnecessary.

I am an XX woman who doesn't menstruate anymore (IUD). I am soooo grateful for that!! LOL. Menstruation sucks. I would love for my DD to get an IUD that stops menstruation when she is a teen.

I have no problem with saying "people who menstruate." As a woman, I have no desire to claim menstruation as some great thing. It's a PITA.

Sounds to me like, because you are a woman, you have had to deal with menstruation and take steps to handle it in your life and assisted your daughter in the same task. It is a PITA, a PITA women have to deal with all over the world.

And you may not care about menstruation but in some cultures as soon as a girl gets her period she is married off to an older man. So it is a big deal around the world and it is an issue for women, not people who menstruate.

This is a sort of wild hypo. You're assuming trans people don't have this convo with new potential partners WAY before "starting to get intimate." Do you actually have any trans friends?

In some cultures girls aren't allowed to come to school when they begin to menstruate, leading them to get 25% or more less education than their male counterparts. It's nice you can get your daughter an IUD. Because women advocated for birth control in this country and need to continue to advocate for it for girls all over the world still struggling to get even basic feminine hygiene products.

Im a np and I do have a friend who is a trans woman and I was terribly worried for her because she WAS getting a bit intimate before telling. I was afraid she’d be attacked by a transphobe (not thinking of how her partner took it) but it absolutely happens.

a) she doesn’t think the rights of women who sexually identify as female should be diminished,

b) young adults (under 18) should not be allowed gender reassignment surgery and even adults need to have more rigorous standards for completion since its irreversible, and

c) trans being a identity more than a sexuality is subject to groupthink which is why it’s exploded in culture recently.

To me, this is the equivalent of All Lives Matter. By promoting awareness of and requesting protection for trans women, no one is saying that cis women are worth any less.

Except when it comes to demanding things that might hurt natural born women such as trans women competing in female sports or going into female bathrooms.

Well, cis girls and women just need to accept that. If cis girls lose to trans girls in women's sports, then they need to be good losers. Not bad losers.

Troll

I'm not a troll, I'm stating the only reasonable position to take wrt women's sports and trans women. Some people also think it's problematic, but what's a better alternative? Barring trans athletes, imposing a transition period hiatus, something else? All problematic.

If you are a trans woman, then you are a biological man who has chosen to become a woman and you have your Y DNA and years of male hormones that have shaped your physique. Therefore you are genetically and physically different from biological women. Trans women could always choose to compete against the gender they were born as, or we can create a separate category for trans women.

That is the whole point. Trans women don’t need a whole separate category! They are women too. A trans woman does not diminish any other woman’s womanhood or the struggles she has faced as a woman. There is no need to be exclusionary of trans women and “other” them by demanding they be in their own category. And that is exactly what JKR does when she pops up with this crap every 6 months- claims she’s some great defender of lesbians and women’s rights or whatever by excluding trans women from the narrative. Trans women are women.

I really don’t understand what’s offensive about that statement.

I have seen friends’ occasionally post about blocking her and how she’s transphobic. Because I was never a Harry Potter fan I had never followed her very closely. It’s very disappointing to now read her statement and know this is what all the anger was about. Really? Seriously?

She literally denies the existence of trans people. She will not acknowledge that gender =/= sex and a trans woman in her mind is not a woman.

The vast majority of people do not believe trans women are literally women. They are trans, and that is fine. They can dress how they want, present as they want, have surgeries and get the hormones they want. But that doesn’t make them literally women, and that’s essentially all that JK has said.

The problem with JKR is that she is expecting people to read and understand a whole paragraph. Most people's education is limited to comprehending what is tweeted in a sentence.

Her books were long and well written and educated people and children read it. Now, the people who are reading what she wrote are the adults who have the comprehension of understanding only one sentence from a "Tweet".

JKR is absolutely correct IMHO. But the world is saying "TL; DR".

She should get away from Social Media because people are TSTL.

We're all in the same group as "female." I don't care if trans women want to join. The more the merrier.

THIS

It doesn't. I think JKR is dumb to make this about the bathrooms. I don't care about trans people advocating for rights at all. They should! They should absolutely do that and feminists should support them as an intersectional partner for advocating for equality.

Changing language so women don't exist is the issue. And it is an issue that trans people would I assume not like either, as they would then not have language to describe their own vision of their gender.

I don't think the issue is about bathroom as much as it is safe space. JK Rowling is a sexual and domestic abuse servivor and supports shelters for women who have been abused. Her concern is that under Scottish law a man can show up and state they are a women no matter if the person has not had any surgery, not taking hormones, not doing anything to identify as a women but merely state they are a woman. Men historically have oppressed women, she is concerned safe spaces for women are being taken away.

No the problem with JKR is she’s a TERF. All that money and she spends her time being a bigot. Why is she so fixated on trans women anyway?

This is a specious argument as trans individuals are MULTIPLE times more likely to experience violence for being trans than they are to inflict it.
