J.K. Rowling’s post on trans-identity and modern misogyny

Sadly she is getting ripped apart by the media and being labelled as anti-trans, which I didn't at all get from reading her essay. I too share her concerns especially about trans youth, as I know a young person who wants to transition. I am also concerned about the exclusion of natural born women from the discussion on women's rights.

I find it interesting that her tweet on the subject a few days ago got over 200k likes, which suggests a pretty broad support. But the media discussion seems to be universally negative.

I think it was her tweets over the weekend and flippant way she stating that “women” menstruate not the objective “people” that was in the ad. So those couple 140 character tweets were just quick snippets of her thoughts and included snark. What she published was well thought out and clearly resonates with a number of people.

Oh I see. It is ridiculous though that it's no longer appropriate to reference women when discussing menstruation or pregnancy or childbirth.

Gah, I can’t imagine anyone wanting to be a woman. I’ve been one for 50 years and as far as I can tell, there’s very little upside.

So she’s basically a TERF?

She’s back pedaling now by claiming less controversial when she’s spent the last few years posting/liking much more inflammatory things. Now that she’s seeing a backlash she’s trying to look better.

She's not radical and she's not much of a feminist, but she is definitely anti-trans.

Here's a breakdown of her claims vs. the facts. It won't persuade you if you think penis = man and vagina = woman, but otherwise, it's fast and useful:

She basically wrote the essay for you! You should read it.

I was unaware until reading this article that lesbians were being pressured to date and have sexual relationships with trans women who haven’t transitioned. That was news to me!and I can kind of see her point that some of what the trans community is doing is once again erasing women. I didn’t think the article was very well written, though.

She is a TERF and the rest of you that agree with her are TERFs too.

Proud TERF here! I will not allow men to erase or silence me.

I’m fine with that.

I actually think the article was quite well-written and easy to digest for a broad populace. Which is what you want to get your message out and makes J.K. absolutely dangerous in this regard.

Imagine the kids who will read it, because its on the creator of Harry Potter's website. They probably wouldn't want to sit through 5,000 words from a psychologist's examination of trans-identity, but her content absolute speaks to the issues in a way they can understand.

I am having flashbacks to Sara Huckabee Sanders announcing that real feminists wouldn't allow criticism of her.

a) she doesn’t think the rights of women who sexually identify as female should be diminished,

b) young adults (under 18) should not be allowed gender reassignment surgery and even adults need to have more rigorous standards for completion since its irreversible, and

c) trans being a identity more than a sexuality is subject to groupthink which is why it’s exploded in culture recently.

To me, this is the equivalent of All Lives Matter. By promoting awareness of and requesting protection for trans women, no one is saying that cis women are worth any less.
