Changing language so women don't exist is the issue. And it is an issue that trans people would I assume not like either, as they would then not have language to describe their own vision of their gender.

I think you would do well to reframe your analysis here. No one is changing language so that women don't exist. Women exist, but not everyone who menstruates is a woman, and not all women menstruate.

I'm using the menstruation example because it is what set Rowling off this time. You can say that women exist, and you can say that some men menstruate. Neither invalidates the other.

You can also say women menstruate, just like JKR did. It is a true statement and doesn't negate the fact that some trans men menstruate, or that some women don't menstruate. Saying that women menstruate shouldn't be controversial. just like saying that women get breast cancer shouldn't be controversial and doesn't negate the fact that men can get it too.

The issue is JK said they only term for people who menstruate should be “women.” This is a fallacy because many women don’t even menstruate, and trans men still menstruate and gender non binary people menstruate. So no, menstruation = woman is false.

If you are female, and you don’t menstruate, it’s because there is a problem. The female body is supposed to menstruate for purposes of reproduction.

Have you ever heard of menopause? Are you saying that after menopause one is no longer a woman since they no longer menstruate?

But menstruation is so synonymous with “woman” that even this post-menopausal woman here identifies with it.

One thing I've seen recently that really bothers me is using 'pregnant people' or 'womb bearers' instead of moms to be or mothers. Becoming a mother is a huge moment and to have that reduced to being a 'womb bearer' is hurtful. This minimizes women's experiences at one of the most vulnerable times of life

Detransitioning, I think that we will look back on all of this with shock and horror! If we had a broader view socially what was acceptable for women and men and a more equal society would folks really be doing this to their bodies. If men could wear what they want, express themselves openly wihtout ridiculer and there was more equality between the sexes would trans men and women still want to change their bodies with surgery and hormones. I don't know? Clearly there is a diff between trans men/women and women/men hormonally can we not accept that? This clip and article on those who transition back is very interesting...

If the question is, are trans women the same as cis women?
The answer is, yes trans women can identify as women (or anything else they want to) because gender is an identity.
At the same time trans women are obviously not the same as cis women biologically, just look at the difference in sex chromosomes.
To sum up, trans women are males (biologically) who identify as female (as a social gender).
Trans women share some similarities as cis women but since they are also different biologically, trans women =/= cis women.

This seems pretty simple.

I had to read your post several times because at first you say yes, trans women can identify as women, then at the end you say transwomen are not women.

I don't quite buy the argument that gender is an identity insomuch as it is, first and foremost, a biology. That is the basis of the gender. The social construct argument wants to weaken this basis, but it is a very powerful basis that can't be ignored. See the rubbish earlier about menstruating as someone tries to circumvent basic science.

Things would be much simpler if transwomen accepted they are not women but transwomen and that the extreme advocates among them accept there are places they may not be able to use because they are reserved for biological women (women's sports, for example). They should make their peace with it. The reason the debate has become so polarizing is because trans activists have turned it into an all but nothing cause. It also doesn't help that the angry activists tried to deplatform and cancel JK Rowling, who is otherwise sympathetic to those who feel the need to live as the opposite gender, for simply pointing out the basic reality of the science, which is why the trans activists are very much a case of emperor's new clothing.

Cis women and trans women are the same gender (social). However, cis women and trans women are not the same sex (biological). In other words, both cis women and trans women are women but only cis women are female.

Acknowledging this reality does not conflict with trans rights.
