Is skiing elitist?

Based on this BS, living and breathing is also elitist! Only the truly lucky ones get to do it. It's expensive too.

Thank you! I don't think people even know what "elitist" means anymore or maybe they never did

This is such BS! We are not rich, we save a portion of our paycheck for a vacation each year, and yes it is skiing. We cannot afford ski in/ski out, brown paper bag our lunches (as we do everyday for work and school, which is how we save money) and we buy used equipment at ski swaps when we need something. Most of the time we drive to our destinations, especially if the kids school vacation is between two weekends giving us ten days of vacation. We are not rich, probably never will be, but it's how we choose to spend our vacations with our children. And we are certainly not elitists.

You are not a skier.

Really? Skied telluride before it had a ritz, skied purgatory with my new husband, have good friends who own a property near squaw and skied there often before kids. But that was when DH and I lived out west and were childless, not rich but just jumped on any day ski junket we could. Pizza junctioin in tuckeewas the best, no longer there sadly. I am a skier, a damn good one at that even skied China bowl as a child after school. You are the definition of an elitist skier op is talking about, and obviously quite the snot. Lol

You were a skier, you are not now, nor are you kids. if you go to Teluride a few weekends every winter, you are a skier, or go up to vermont or have a cabin you go to on the weekends.

You save your pennies to take your kids to ski every blue moon.

You are not a skier and you are not raising skiers.

DP you sound unnecessarily angry with the PP. She’s clearly a skier raising skiers. You’re an idiot.

They ski once a year. It's like playing tennis once a year and claiming you are a tennis player.

She clearly understands skiing is very expensive because she has to save alllll year to do it and can rarely afford to do it.

Ehh. DP. We are skiers. We take our kids skiing once a year. Just got back from a week in Colorado (week after Christmas). My 8 yo can do black diamonds, so I think we are raising skiers despite going once a year.

Your kid could go every 5 years and still do black diamonds, it's not that big of a deal.

Douche? I'd call her ELITEST! Kind of proves the point of the thread.

Anonymous wrote:I have older kids than yours & live in New England but here’s an estimate based on new gear. Of course you can get used stuff more cheaply if you know what you’re looking for.

Seasons pass $500-$1200
Weekend race program Dec - Mar $1800
New race skis $500-$1000 each, need at least 2 pair, GS & slalom
New poles $100-$150 each, need 2 (GS & slalom)
Race boots $300-$500
Race helmet $200-$250
Chin guard for slalom $60
Shin guards for slalom $100-$150
Pole guards for slalom $50-$100
Goggles $50-$200
New race suit $300-$600
Jacket, ski pants, mittens
Race entry fees $25-150/race
US ski & snowboard membership $150
State ski association membership

Plus travel costs. Hotel and lift tickets if it’s a mountain your pass doesn’t cover. And if you want to watch your kid and it’s a mountain where you can’t hike to the course it’s usually $50-$150 a day for parent/spectator passes.

My daughter is a U14 racer and the race skis at that level are under $500 (I think I paid about $350). Race skis are good for about 2 seasons and then you should replace.

Would love to know what your kid is skiing on. New Rossi Hero GS skis are well over $500 w/o bindings... Same with Volkl Race Tigers.

You are an odd one!

Well I think the PP is a jerk but I also agree that if you only go once a year, you're not really a skiier. Skiiers are people who have season passes and go most weekends in the winter to their local resort plus travel to do it somewhere new on vacations.

If you only rode a horse once a year, would you call yourself an equestrian?

Not if you are in CO. I know plenty of ski/snowboard bums! But, for most people it is a very expensive sport.

Anonymous wrote:Yeah it costs at least $60 bucks per person for a lift ticket. Only the ultra rich can go.

ULTRA rich??!! are you kidding me?! You are being ridiculous you know. People do NOT go skiing every weekend.

No a lot of people who aren’t wealthy are willing to make the sacrifice for skinning. Drugs are expensive too, but plenty of non wealthy people prioritize spending on that.

Exactly! Smoking is expensive too, and many people of "modest" means smoke...I don't smoke, don't do drugs, don't do porn, rarely drink - prefer to spend money on travel and such.

Maybe they did not use the right term, but it is certainly a sport for the upper middle class to rich. When I was in 6th grade and very poor, my school did a ski trip. I rented skis and tried the bunny slope in my jeans. I realize how ridiculous that was now. It was a miserable experience and my one and only time on the slopes.

Where do lift tickets cost $60 per person? I pay over $133 per person in low season.
