I think the difference is that skiing appeals to a lot of people that some other expensive sports don’t. A lot of non wealthy people are willing to spend money on skiing. |
This. |
No a lot of people who aren’t wealthy are willing to make the sacrifice for skinning. Drugs are expensive too, but plenty of non wealthy people prioritize spending on that. |
You were a skier, you are not now, nor are you kids. if you go to Teluride a few weekends every winter, you are a skier, or go up to vermont or have a cabin you go to on the weekends. You save your pennies to take your kids to ski every blue moon. You are not a skier and you are not raising skiers. |
Ok Busch Gardens is expensive too but plenty of non wealthy people go there. I grew up around a lot of lower middle class people and a lot of them went skiing, and no I did not live near the mountains. I did grow up in a beach culture though, and generally beach people tend to like skiiing as well. |
Seriously, and most parks and rec centers offer cheap classes. It may have originally been associated with the wealthy, but one does not need to be wealthy anymore to play tennis. |

You have at least one stupid coworker. |
DP you sound unnecessarily angry with the PP. She’s clearly a skier raising skiers. You’re an idiot. |
They ski once a year. It's like playing tennis once a year and claiming you are a tennis player. She clearly understands skiing is very expensive because she has to save alllll year to do it and can rarely afford to do it. |
Ehh. DP. We are skiers. We take our kids skiing once a year. Just got back from a week in Colorado (week after Christmas). My 8 yo can do black diamonds, so I think we are raising skiers despite going once a year. |
| Not necessarily, but it’s up there on the ol’ List of things white people like. |

This is so interesting to me. We lived in Denver and Durango Colorado for about 8 years. I never went skiing. I did go snow tubing (basically sledding) pretty often, but truthfully, I didn't think skiing was worth the risk (I am an ER Doc and DW is an Ortho Surgeon). We both saw insane injuries and we knew too many people who have chronic knee and back issues. It's a rough sport and we didn't even let our kids go.
That said, we both loved, loved the mountains during the summer and early fall. My favorite place in the world is Aspen in July. I guess different strokes for different folks? |

It's not always that expensive. You can find great deals through schools. We live in NY. To buy a season pass to our local ski hill is over $900 for the season, which doesn't include gear, locker rentals, the clothing you'll need, etc.
However, we bought our passes through my kid's school because he joined the ski club. It was $125 for him and his siblings and I think $225 for adults. So we spent a little over $800 for the season instead of $4,500. Plus the equipment rentals. DH and I have our own skis and boots. |
Thank you! I don't think people even know what "elitist" means anymore or maybe they never did |
