It's not far at all - its barely further than National Airport. And it is much closer than the trek to the train is at a bunch of international airports that I've used - Heathrow in particular is a really long trek to all 3 of the train services there but Frankfurt is also a good trek as is DeGaulle. It is also closer than O'hare and Atlanta and Newark. The problem with Dulles is purely aesthetic in that the Metrorail station is separated from the terminal by an ugly surface parking lot - doesn't matter that there is an underground walkway with people movers - it looks far so people think it is. In reality it takes about 4 minutes to get between the station and the terminal which is pretty good by any measure. But I'm betting you've not actually used it yet and are just mad from looking at the photos. |
How do you figure it is “barely further than National Airport”? It seems to be about 3x further. |
Keep whining. It’s working great for you so far. |
| I haven’t read all the comments, but posting this incase someone else hasn’t. There is a tunnel connecting the new metro station to the airport with moving walkways. I read that it’s a 4 minute walk (or less). |
I think the bigger point is, WMATA and MTAA had the opportunity to do something that would be convenient. They chose to add a walkway so that you would "know your place" in the hierarchy. |
| "Europe"? Where's that? Poland? Italy? Ever try buying a cup of coffee & croissant in Switzerland without taking out a second mortgage? Good food in England (Marmite & warm beer)? |
Whether intentional or not you are making me laugh, so thanks! |
Try this. They built a metro line all the way out to Dulles, and stopped a 1/4 mile from the airport. |
As they should have. Why is that a problem for you? |
| For anyone who has tried to get to Kennedy from NYC. Metro to Dulles is an absolute dream. |
|
Haven't tried it yet but will do some step-counting on my next trip. I hate the "mobile lounges" too, but the unfortunate reality is that they are still faster than the trek to customs at some other airports (Chicago O'Hare and Madrid come to mind...)
|
and your incessant whining is going to magically move the station 500 feet to your preferred location? |
As they should have. Why is that a problem for you? Planet destroying, population murdering drivers should be punished for making poor transportation choices. WMATA riders and those who don't drive to the airport should be rewarded. |
|
The posters overreacting to the distance between the Metro station and terminal gave me a good laugh. Have any of you actually been to the airport? Have any of you actually made the walk between the station and the terminal? I fly out of IAD frequently and park in the daily garage right behind the Metro station. It's five minutes. Tops. A well-lit underground tunnel with people movers connects the station and terminal.
People need to get a grip. |
I fully agree with you. But truth is that this is just a couple cranks making this complaint that should be ignored. |
