Dulles Airport Metro Station location

The people complaining about the distance are people that don't understand the point of public transportation at all, live in their giant SUV's for 1, and stalk strip mall parking lots for the closest spot.

You check-in at the train station in Central Hong Kong. You need to be there 90 minutes before your flight if international. You drop your bags at the train station, not the airport.

There is an express train to the airport that takes 25 minutes. The train lets you off basically inside the terminal. You walk maybe three minutes to the security line and then go through security and immigration exit procedures, after which you walk (or small train) to your gate.

And at Dulles? Have a nice roll from the parking garage/subway station after your XX minute metro ride.

What's your point?

They don’t have a point. In terms of the inconveniences of Dulles, the location of the metro station is the bottom of the list, which starts with the awful people movers. It’s a longer walk from checkin to security to the A gates than it is from the metro to the terminal. People honestly need to get a grip.

The people complaining about the distance are the transit people because everyone with an SUV is going to take that. I will keep on using Washington Flyer thank you very much.

If you parked in Garage 1, it's a similar distance. You actually walk past the Metro entrance on the way from the garage to the airport.

Yes, Dulles was designed to have the metro station right at the terminal it would come on the mid-level, where current passener pick-up is), but cost prohibitive.

It’s a 5-7 minute walk from baggage claim along a well-lit corridor with people movers. Grow up, OP.

But much much shorter if someone drops you off in a car. Metro riders get second class treatment.

The same walk you’d take if you drove and parked in the daily garage.

I think they probably should have gone with the closer approach, but I'll admit it's hard to justify that kind of money for an airport where the concourses are falling apart.

The People Movers are the worst thing about IAD. Anyone who has arrived on an international flight knows what a shit show they are.

+1 Recently flew out of and into Dulles after a couple of years of only flying through BWI and Reagan. Dulles is ridiculous. So exhausting if you have a young child & luggage.

There’s pretty much no hope for changing that with in-bound international flights. There’s no other way to keep people separated until they get through passport control and customs. They’d have to build a large concourse directly off the main terminal, which isn’t going to happen. They can’t even replace the horrible “temporary” C/D concourses.

Yup. OP, that was a bad decision made years and years ago. A station actually at the terminal would have cost another $330 million, and evidently that was too much to pay for a station that was actually convenient for travelers.

Hah. No. The airport metro is for staff and commuters to use. Actual travelers are not taking a 70 minute train ride from DC with luggage.

The original problem was where Dulles was built.

In college, I would get on the subway, go for about 20 minutes, then switch trains, go one stop on a slow line, then switch trains again to go to the airport station, at which point I would get on a shuttle bus to the airport. Total about an hour and a half for $1. And this was while having the alternate option be a $10 cab ride.

Remind me.

Why? Because they're pissed that parking is closer to the terminal than the metro station?

What are you talking about? I don't drive and I'm outraged at the distance of the metro station from the terminal. So sick of metro riders getting punished instead of rewarded.

I wish I could leave for Europe tomorrow. Affordable health care and transit and great food to boot.
