All things solidcore

check the muscle focus calendar if you want more arm work and take arm wrap day. there will def be more arm work that day. if it’s a leg wrap day, arms will be a bit lighter. IME the coaches in DC (esp shaw, admo, 14th) coach harder classes than in VA/MD. look for pro and master coaches if you feel like your classes aren’t challenging.

If you do solidcore 3 times a week, is that a good substitute for weight training?

Absolutely. It's not identical, but if you work hard in solidcore and follow the cues (move slowly), it's great strength training.

I don't feel like I need the lower body as much. I take arms and abs where I can but it isn't offered as much. What other classes do people like? Barry's?

A lot of this is coach dependent. Which location(s) are you taking at?

Barry’s seems much more lower-body focused, from what friends have told me. Maybe F45?

Old Town. The newer coaches are definitely one issue. The classes are so much more basic and don't have many hold/pulses. The schedule is probably 50% coaches I don't feel work me that hard. I try and do what I can to add amplifications but that only goes so far. I also am finding that even experienced coaches are keeping it more basic bc if all the new New Years resolution people. It's annoying to have a class toned way down based on the experience level in the class. I fully support those people coming out and trying a new thing. But I'm paying $40 and they should be offered modifications vs me getting a sub par class.

Who do you recommend at Old Town for more advanced classes? Moving close by that studio next month and would love some recommendations!!

I really like solidcore but couldn't justify the expense. Very expensive compared to gym memberships and running outdoors

But cheaper than a personal trainer and kicks your butt way more than going to the gym.

I just looked it up because a friend really recommended it, and there's a lot of love here. It's $36/class. That's REALLY high, and I own a Peloton. Are people getting discounted classes or making drastic cuts elsewhere to afford it? I can't imagine 2-3 classes/week.

I'm one of the experienced PPs; I pay $300/month for unlimited. I take 3-4 classes/week, so for me it works out to less than $20/class. I could easily pay that for yoga, and this is so much more worth it. I also own a Peloton

(they have other package deals, too, depending on how many classes people take; I don't know anyone who just buys single classes as a one-off)

You go 3-4 times a week? Don't you get bored? I like solidcore but find it super repetitive.

That's great it has worked out for you and you can take it frequently enough to make it worth it. For me, I wouldn't/couldn't spend $100 on a gym membership let alone $300. To each is own : ) (FWIW, I got a Peleton as a gift).

No. But I've done enough endurance sports that I don't get bored easily with that kind of thing. I love finding new ways to push myself in class. It's like some of the more technical endurance sports (rowing, swimming); there are always ways to improve. But I totally get that it's not for everyone, for that reason in addition to others.

As for the cost, plenty of people spend well over $300 on things I don't, like clothes, salon appointments, eating out, etc. I understand my privilege, and I also choose to prioritize where I spend my money.

I buy one 40 pack a year ($29/class), so I spend about $120/month on solidcore. I have been going for 2 years, and it has made a tremendous difference for me. Once per week is sufficient for me, although 2x/week would be better.

Tell me which you studios and instructors you think are hardest? EG I've heard Adams Morgan is tougher than Cathedral Commons.

IME, it depends more on the coach and the other clients in the class, i.e., a room full of strong people = a much harder class. Ryan at Bethesda is my go-to; he's super tough (but also really supportive). Artemis before she left

I also find 6am classes to be more challenging than later in the day, probably because the people who are willing to get up that early to workout tend to be a fairly intense bunch (myself included).
