Mad at my kids. Mad at myself, feeling like a failure

Also, OP sometimes my kids complain when I make them do things like that

- like I just made them write to their cousins at camp. I want them to do because it would be nice for the cousins to get mail, but they really do it because I make them. Just like thank you notes. But still, I'm teaching them these things matter and someday when they are older and have agency, maybe they'll just know these are the right things to do.

So just keep making them and doing it and just ignore if they complain.
