I posted the first set of pre-season rankings on the MU thread. It was for 05 girls. Now it's made its own thread. That's cool.


For 05 girls I left Pipeline off my list as they are out of Baltimore. I was limiting this to DC Metro area only, which I do not consider Baltimore a part of.

But since they were mentioned, let's talk Pipeline. Many consider FCV DA 05s to be the best team in that age group. Fact is, they've never beaten Pipeline. When Pipeline loaned their "PT" players to the WSMD team, they beat FCV. Without the Pipeline players, FCV crushed WSMD. Conversely, when FCV pre-DA loaned their 5 best players to the ODFC-FCV team last spring for the east regionals they also lost to Pipeline. Pipeline also has beaten Mont. Rush, more times than not (although have lost too) and Mont. Rush beat McLean ECNL in Jeff Cup. Sure, Pipeline can have some off games just like any team, but I've seen every single one of all the ranked teams play and feel pretty darn qualified to say Pipeline was at the top. Next year, who knows as many of them want to play HS and will no longer play PT DA for Armour (formerly WSMD), so that program will take a hit.

Meanwhile Bethesda ECNL will be tough due to Mont Rush Coyotes player and coach additions, hence why ranked #2 behind FCV.

There appear to be haters for any strong club (probably the reason for the stop hating Mclean/FCV thread). I was the OP on Pipeline. I am not affiliated with the club but respect what the club has built. A few morons harp on the fact that Pipeline tied Loudoun. Well, PDA crushed FCV but does that mean that FCV is still not one of the top 05 teams in the country? Germany crushed Brazil but does that mean that Brazil was not deserving of its high ranking at the time. Coaches of competitive teams in the same age group have told me that they consider Pipeline the most competitive team they have played and that includes ECNL coaches. Also, recognize that Pipeline is not feeding its top players to the DA. A few might play as PT players but Pipeline is pretty much kept the core team together to the detriment of teams on the East Coast. I would love to see Pipeline 05 play PDA.

Look enough with the Pipeline crap. They are Baltimore and very early on the person said why they were not including Spirit MD and Pipeline. People just have a hard on for ONE team.

But here is what was said about Pipeline and why the Loudoun comparison as well as other ECNL scores are brought up:

“I have watched Pipeline destroy local ECNL teams.”

NO Pipeline has not destroyed ANY ECNL team, local or otherwise. A tie to the last place Mid Atlantic ECNL team is not proof of such dominance. Sorry. Did they win against ECNL teams? Yes. Did they destroy them? No. They have a nice team with some fans here who insist on interjecting them in every DA and ECNL discussion like a kid who wants to sit at the cool table.

Enjoy winning in EDP, playing against the occasional ECNL team, which will happen less and less from now on as they stick to their showcase events and no longer play in WAGS, Jeff Cup etc. Playing Loudoun this year will be Pipelines Swan Song.

ECNL teams next year will be moving on to big girls showcases so enjoy the top bracket at WAGS against NPL teams from now on.

I have never watched Pipeline play, but the bragging seems familiar (Arlington and Loudoun) for teams that play in leagues other than DA or ECNL. Once these teams moved to the top leagues in the country, well, we have seen what has happened. I'm not saying any of them are "bad" but their regular competition is not great and can lead to an inflated idea of how great they are.

Many brackets are done with gotsoccer points. Edp teams are awarded points for league play and participate in more tournaments garnering points. Stop using the tournament assignors as god on this.

The DA followed by the ECNL are better environment for development for multiple reasons including better competition. For teams like Pipeline, in today's DA/ECNL environment then cannot develop as quickly so players there are left with two choices - leave for DA or ECNL or, over time, fall behind the kids at those DA/ECNL clubs.

And when their showcasing opportunities are more limited compared to their DA partner counter parts we will see how long those kids stay with Pipeline.

The ECNL teams you played this year will no longer be attending the same tournaments as they did last year. They will be focused more and more on the ECNL national events and will not be as prevalent at the other non ECNL showcases.

So, for Pipeline to continue to draw attention to themselves will have to advance far into their National Championship series through EDP. This becomes harder and harder as a player here or there decide to leave and join a ECNL or DA team. Lose a player or two and the team gets weakened. The team gets weakened it becomes harder and harder to advance in the National Championship. The less successful the team is, the less showcasing potential for players. The less potential for players the more that players leave, the weaker the team becomes. And the circle continues.
