+1. Chantilly has some great schools. It's just further out than most DCUM posters would consider. |
I agree. And part of Oakton (all of Waples Mill ES) feeds into Franklin, so Oakton wouldn't be that far from the job mentioned in the OP. |
| I moved from Gainesville to Chantilly. So what does that say about me? I didn't think it was necessary to live 5 miles away from work. Chantilly was affordable and close enough. |
It says that you have little in common with the OP, who wants to live near a job in Tysons. |
| We really have had a great experience thus far at Thoreau. The administration and teachers are responsive and coordinated. Haven't heard the same from Jackson students that opted to go there. (our kid had a choice and picked Thoreau). Check out the transfer stats but I am aware of 3 transfers from LJ to Thoreau - mid year or after 7th grade. |
| There were about 75 rising 8th graders who left Jackson for Thoreau. Would be interesting to hear their perspectives. |
+1. Rocky Run/Franklin and Carson AAP feeding to Chantilly are all excellent. And depending on the year and metric you look at Chantilly outscores or is in a dead heat with Madison, Woodson and Oakton. And I don’t know how you leave out two of the top 3 TJ feeder MSs. |
I commute Franklin Farm area (Franklin MS or Carson AAP to Chantilly) once a week for an 8am meeting in Tyson’s. As long as I walk on the door by 7:30 aand take the tolls road, I am parked and in my seat at 8. Similar in the evening rush hour, although there is more variation in traffic— it might take 20 minutes or 40. It’s actially an easy commute. The new silver line stations will make it even easier. |
Your kids' peers can be a significant influence on your kids. I'd avoid Eastern Fairfax schools like Glasgow MS, Justice HS and Falls Church HS. Most of the people advising you that any school in Fairfax would be fine, would never send their kids to those schools. And even if they would, that doesn't mean you should. |
It tells me the OP needs to make practical choices and lower expectations sometimes. I can't understand why anybody would think RT 50 to Tyson's is a long commute. It's all relative. |

The best are Langley, McLean, Madison pyramids
Marshall is recently almost mediocre but fell again so I wouldn't count on it |
You poor soul. |
| “Best” means different things to different people. If you’re looking strictly at test scores, which are corellated to family income, McLean, Langley, TJ will top the list. Although test scores are important, they aren’t most important for my child. Instead, I look at class size, administrators, and my child’s ability to participate in extracurricular activities. My child’s low-ranked school turns out to be a good fit for my family, although many of you would never consider it. |

Fell how? You mean with GS’s new system that doesn’t take it into account it’s a IB school? |
