Completely agree. The administration at Kilmer is borderline incompetent and just collecting a paycheck and that has trickled down to the staff as well.

Cooper, Longfellow, and Thoreau are all well-run. Kilmer is not. And its AAP program is taking a big hit as the Langley kids are now at Cooper.

Williamsburg / Yorktown would be the best choice.

They are not in Fairfax County.

Another winning segregation strategy by our liberal school board.

And are inferior to schools closer to Tysons in any event.

How about Carson?

What? Those students should not have been a Kilmer in the first place. Cooper should have had its own AAP program from the get go. It doesn’t make logistical sense.

Magnet programs can be anywhere and are often used across the country to prop up areas with more intensive housing. Many AAP centers were created for that purpose in addition to housing a gifted program. The only reason Cooper has so many "AAP" kids is that it's a rich area that has spent decades fighting upzoning and now has mostly large lot residential. They put up a fuss about leaving Longfellow, many of them send their kids onto TJ, many travel far from Herndon, and many end their children to far away privates, so location isn't really a top priority. The only consolation for the County's equity is that at some point hopefully a new boundary will be drawn for Cooper and Langley that includes Tysons.

The Cooper AAP kids all live within Cooper’s base boundaries. Sending kids from Great Falls to Kilmer served only to prop up Kilmer’s test scores.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve heard of Cooper and of course TJ. We’ve looked at homes in the Kilmer area (near Vienna which would be ideal in terms of proxomity to DH’s office) but I’m having reservations about that MS since reading the comments. Lots of nice homes near the school — what is causing the poor performance that many of you have noticed?

Sorry meant to type “proximity” and also “High Schools” not “Hugh” Schools

Yes, since Kilmer has more apartments in its boundaries, that would be correct. Again part of the reason for a magnet program.
