TJ is the best high school in VA followed by Langley and McLean High.

Yes, that is what the rankings say. lol

Well the post is about the best middle and high schools.

And?

Yes. Hampton Chase/Forest, Buckley's Reserve and some other areas (Colchester Road and others) go to Lanier and FHS.

Even farther from Lanier and Fairfax HS than that. Neighborhoods off of Stringfellow Road like Fair Lakes Glen. Two miles from Chantilly HS, two miles from Centreville HS. 8-9 miles from Fairfax HS. It's asinine.

The long-term solution is for FCPS to cut ties with Fairfax City and build another school further west. As long as Fairfax City requires every student to attend Lanier/Fairfax, the boundaries will be distorted.

Without the county kids, though, the Lanier/Fairfax tear scores would be lower.

It's educational gerrymandering. My neighbor was told years ago by a School Board member that our neighborhood way out here would never be allowed to leave Fairfax HS because of what it would do to test scores and student involvement/parent participation.

School Board members say all kinds of outrageous nonsense.

Do you realize how ridiculously overcrowded Centreville or Chantilly would be if either had to pick up Willow Springs kids.

It’s a marriage of convenience currently: Fairfax City gets an influx of higher scoring kids but FCPS gets to send county kids to a well maintained, spacious school rather than turn one of its schools into an even larger trailer park.

TJ, Langley and McLean may not be the three best schools for every kid, but objectively they are indeed the top three public high schools in the state. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other very good schools, including a number of schools discussed on this thread.

^^^This.

They aren't suited to every child but they are the most highly ranked.

Maybe they wanted the other poster to mention middle schools.

SchoolDigger has Longfellow and Cooper as # 3-4 in state (after two schools that include lower grades) with Frost next in FCPS at #13, followed by Franklin at #16, Carson at #18, and Lake Braddock at #22. No other FCPS middle schools in top 25.

Kids that attend Langley or McLean HS are “TJ” rejects. That’s a compliment.

We live in McLean and have no interest in sending my kids to TJ.

TJ is NOT for everyone

We just moved from Alexandria to Mclean for better schools.

If TJ was our goal, we would have stayed in Alexandria.

Assume PP meant the Alexandria part of Fairfax County. That is where TJ is located.

You might want to work on your flattery.

Most Langley and McLean kids don’t want to go to TJ.

But, yes, the ones that do, and don’t get in, continue to work hard and may just find the consolation prize turned out to be better for them than the brass ring.

Yes, we lived in Alexandria in Fairfax County, around 10 minutes from TJ. I'm sure it would take at least 30 minutes, probably more, to get to TJ from our house in McLean. If we wanted to send our kids to TJ, we would have stayed in our old neighborhood. We lived very close to our AAP center, our middle school had AAP and we lived close to TJ.

+100
Never had any desire to send our kids to TJ. It’s an excellent school, but comes with a lot of drawbacks.
