Totally Agree!! |

McLean was built in the mid-50s and renovated in the early 00's. Langley and Marshall were built in the mid-60s and renovated within the last five years. I think McLean's front entrance and library look the nicest (every renovated high school in FCPS now, except TJ, ends up looking the same), but Langley and Marshall have some nice interior spaces, especially Langley. |
Um, maybe because McLean was already renovated in the early 2000's?? And Marshall and Langley had never been renovated?
|
| We are in Potomac Hills which is currently Chesterbrook/Longfellow/McLean and are hearing rumors we may be moved to the Langley pyramid. I was wondering when this would all happen and if kids were already at Longfellow or McLean if they would finish there or have to switch schools between grades? |
I don't think people zoned for Chesterbrook, Kent Gardens, or Haycock will be redistricted. Those schools are 100% feeders to Longfellow/McLean. There are three primary options for redistricting, each with its own pros and cons. 1) The 85-90% of Franklin Sherman that is currently zoned for McLean, rather than Langley (in McLean). 2) The 20-30% of Colvin Run and Spring Hill that are currently zoned for McLean, rather than Langley (in Vienna and Tysons). 3) The 20-30% of Spring Hill and Westgate in Tysons that currently zoned for McLean (rather than Langley, in the case of Spring Hill, or Marshall, in the case of Westgate). Students already at Longfellow or McLean almost surely would be grandfathered, if past practices hold. The goal presumably would be to bring the entering classes at McLean down from around 600 kids to closer to 525, so that both Langley and McLean end up with about 2100 kids, rather than have 2400 kids at McLean and 1800 at Langley. |
Love to see that happens! |
| How can they do that when they are proposing other schools such as Oakton to have classes closer to 700. |
It's not just the size of classes, but also how many students the schools are built to accommodate. FCPS has been expanding the high schools that it's been renovating lately, including Oakton, and has plans to expand the capacity of several other schools that aren't otherwise scheduled for a renovation (Justice, Madison, and West Potomac). In Oakton's case, the plan is to increase the capacity to 2625 students, and there potentially might be additional space at Madison and/or South Lakes down the road, since South Lakes' capacity is now over 2700 kids and the plan to increase Madison's capacity to 2400. Longer term, they may build an additional high school in western Fairfax that would affect Oakton, although it's hard to pin down exactly what FCPS has in mind. McLean was left off the list of schools getting an addition, presumably because FCPS doesn't want to spend the money when they just expanded Langley as part of its renovation. So unless FCPS does something, McLean is projected to have over 2500 kids by 2023, in a building that' was only built to accommodate 1993 students. It's possible the projections will be off, but right now McLean has more trailers than Oakton, according to the latest CIP. |
| This is really going to impact McLean and Langley not so much Marshall? |
So it appears, at least for now. In the latest CIP, FCPS says Marshall has space for 2334 students, and projects GCM won't be overcrowded at any time through FY 2023-24. |
PH used to be Langley. I think they changed in the 70's? |
Yes (late 70s), and other parts of Langley moved to McLean in the mid-80s. But there were also parts of Great Falls that moved to Langley from Herndon. |
The latter part is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously, someone got paid for that. Makes zero sense. But then again, Virginia. |
