Holy Sh*t. Clarksburg is no better than Gaithersburg High.

My kid goes to Clarksburg HS, and I need to know: do we live in the Siberian Hinterlands, or do we live in Ganglandia? This is an urgent question.

(Or maybe we live in Siberian Ganglandia?)

I'm pretty sure that's the Siberian Hinterlands. I'm in the Gaithersburg High district, which is definitely Ganglandia (except not really).

Because you can buy a 13,000 square foot house for $3 million in Clarksburg, of course!

Just beware of the roving gangs of low-SES, low-SAT-score Clarksburg street thugs. Or, um, something.

If OP is looking for a big house, I'd recommend Poolesville, not Clarksburg. PHS is known as one of the best schools in state of Maryland. Clarksburg is not known as an academic power house (not even close).

Because of the kids from elsewhere in the upcounty who test into the high school magnet programs that are housed at Poolesville HS.

I don't see any 13,000 square foot houses for sale in Poolesville for $3 million, although for $3.9 million OP could buy a historic house with 156 acres and 6 foaling stalls in the historic bank barn.

Teaching kids is nothing like turning light switches on and off. It takes time and effort. Don't be stupid.

Are you saying that the average Whitman SAT scores are higher because the teachers at Whitman are better?

If all you think the Poolesville area has going for it is the high school, you obviously have no idea. To call it very isolated is frankly silly. The area is somewhat rural, and super pretty, but if you’ve ever been in truly rural areas that actually are isolated, you’ll grasp the difference. If shopping malls and the like right next door is what you crave, you’ll obviously be disappointed, but it is easy to get to whatever amenity you seek. With the exception of skating rinks. We’re also very close to the river and the lake and all the beauty they hold. Plus, Frederick is a great resource to us that down county doesn’t use or know as much. That neither of the PP’s even mention it shows they shouldn’t be passing advice about living up here. The very fact that one PP thinks of a community as a place to go just for a good HS instead of a home for your entire family exposes why you miss one of the main allures of the Poolesville area.

I am one of the PPs who has lived in Germantown for a long time, although I was not someone who said there was nothing to Poolesville besides the HS. I drive to all these places frequently for my job and know about what is there. Frederick is great. I go there often but I do not think of it as convenient for errands, especially not with traffic. And Barnesville is not Poolesville. It is significantly closer to Germantown and to Frederick than Poolesville is. Poolesville and Barnesville are lovely. I know lots of people who live in those towns and love them. But the distance to even basic shopping is significant and I don't think people in lower MoCo realize just how rural much of upper MoCo is. For some people being more than fifteen minutes from a grocery store is a big deal. Of course it's not actually isolated but it's much more isolated than people may be expecting for MoCo. I also know people who have moved closer in because it is too far away from things. The OP will have to head out there and see if it's the right place for them.

As someone in the system 20+ years, none of this is really funny. We're moving b/c I don't want my children in classes where the same disruptive kids get a "free pass" each day. I am tired of teaching gang members. I'm sick of having to spit out any ethical fiber in my body b/c my administration caves to central office to "avoid a lawsuit."

We don't teach, people. And sadly, so many of you are too naive (or too simple) to see what's happening to our system.

off my soapbox

I feel sorry for those of you with young kids b/c it's not getting any better.

Clarksburg HS parent PP here. I don't know whether or not you are teaching, but I do know that my kid is learning.
