+1 And buy close to the school in case MCPS tries to redraw school boundary map

proximity isn’t always a guarantee. i’m in lakelands and we’re pretty concerned rachel carson’s new boundaries will cut us out, despite being literally 0.5 miles from the school.

If I were you I would live in N.Potomac/Rockvilke and send my kids to private.

Or you east of 270 or west? If you are West, it is a quick commune from River/Glen/travilla/jones lane

Stay away from Wootton, it's toxic.

why would you pick QO over Wootton? honest question from someone whose kid isn’t in HS yet, so no direct experience.

QO is a very good school and the data shows that white and asian students and wealthy students score about the same at both schools. If you aren't both of those then I would choose Wootton. QO is just as good of a school and is thought of to be more well-rounded. It includes the whole kentlands/lakelands area, Jones Lane, some parts of darnestown. Wootton will always be the best(with churchill and whitman) but QO is not any worse and is in the top of mcps schools too. Both schools have similar percentages of white students but the main differences are that QO's minorities are more diverse(around 13% asian, 13% black, 25% hispanic) while Wootton minorities are mainly asian(37% asian, 6% black, 7% hispanic) and that QO FARMS is 20% while Wootton is 6%. But in the end both are fantastic schools.

sure, i totally agree. i was wondering why some people think wootton is toxic. is it the academic competitiveness? frankly my main concern about QO is the seemingly huge emphasis on football.

Competitiveness, elitism, drugs

Football at QO is fun and brings the community together. It is by no means a great football program just good for public.

This is silly. Being competitive is not a bad thing. Elitism is a subjective option at best. Drugs are every high school in MCPS.

My DC is at UMD Honors and most of her Honors program friends are from either Wootton or MCPS magnets. Not even one kid from QO that I know of.

ok, and our friend’s daughter went to oxford from QO. what’s your point?

My sons' friend from QO was accepted to upenn and Navy. Decisions decisions

NP here. Actually, you're the one that should do the work. Make sure you're able to back up your statements.

I hope you're not just looking at SAT scores as the basis of whether it's a good school or not. SAT scores are a function of SES. Clarksburg has a higher FARMS rate than QO and Wootton. Please look at graduation rates and test scores by race/ethnicity. Clarksburg is a diverse school but high performing.

Dear OP,

If you go yo Wootton you will ha be test scores crammed down your throat.

If you go to QO or Clarksburg you will get the same curriculum, great teachers, awesome peers, school spirit with an emphasis on developing the whole person with a supportive (not cut throat) community.

Exhibit A ^^^^^^^

Perhaps the strongest argument against Wootton is that it has parents like this, who keep track of where their child's university classmates went to high school.

Most people are happy with Richard Montgomery. Downtown Rockville has quite a few restaurants and there is a variety of homes. It would take 15 minutes to get to Germantown
With your budget you could buy a mansion near Germantown for $1.5 million and send your kids to private school

If you’re currently living in McLean and you want a $3million dollar house, you are going to be seriously disappointed with most of the suggestions on this thread. You should look into Potomac and put your kids in private.

You don’t know that test scores are a function of SES, it is highly likely that SES is a result of low cognitive ability enforced generationally which test scores simply report back. It is the classic chicken or the egg argument but the averages point to one and emotional arguments point to the other. Obviously there will be a curve to the intelligence levels across any SES groups but simply stated it is fairly easy to predict what pot stupid or ineffective people will end up in. It is also fairly consistent what type of kids they produce. Outliers are sweet stories but rare

If knowing about your kid's friends is a bad thing, yes, I am guilty of that. No doubt. I know (most of) DC's good friends (and they know me), where they went to school, their majors and what they want to do. We have taken them out for lunch a few times when we visit our kid. I am not sure what's so bad about that though.

Seems like Wootton mom does not want her kids in a school with kids with "low cognitive ability". Wow that is some cold sh*t!

No toxicity in this post.

Happy World Down's Syndrome Day.

Most people know where their kids friends went to college school.

You purport to know where every single child in your child's college program went to HS.

My son players D1 sports and I don't know where every team mate went to HS. Why would I know, why would I care.

Listen lady, you already proved to be a parent that people would consider toxic. Just cut your losses. I get you don't understand but it is crystal clear to us who avoid moms like you.
