I wish we have the scores by income level. As it is, the Asians and Whites do much poorly in QO and NW than Wootton. Is it because the Wootton kids are from a higher SES family?

For the most part, SES is tied to test scores, but some of that can be negated by prepping for the SATs. This is what many poorer Asian students do. I don't know what the income levels of the Asian families are in QO, but there are certainly sections of QO that are more expensive than most of the Wootton cluster - Kentlands and Lakelands.

In some high schools, especially Wootton, it is very normal and extremely common to prep for the SATs. This is why SAT scores is not an adequate way to evaluate the effectiveness/success of a school.

right. it’s a little weird, though, because i’m sure in places like kentlands there is just as much SAT prep as in the wootton neighborhoods. the discrepancy among the scores within the same racial group is weird.

more families w/ $ at wootton than QO. not sure why you find it weired

Exactly, and combine that with the high pressure cooker environment, it shouldn't be a surprise at all.

you really think the QO white families are that much poorer than the wootton families?

Wootton students/families value academics more than QO, which people like to label as a more "well rounded, into sports" school than Wootton. Is it any wonder that a school comprised of students who live in this academic pressure cooker would score higher than students in a school that want a more "well rounded, high school spirit, athletics" environment?

Well QO has 23% FARMS, Wootton has 5%. Although, it's not necessarily about being poorer. It's all about being in an environment where there are super high expectations. Some people prefer Wootton for this reason and plenty avoid it for the same reason. I for one don't want my kid in that type of culture. I prefer a more well-rounded high school experience for my child.

OP. Buy in Bethesda- go to Whitman. Once your kids are out of HS, you can always move to Germantown.

What you don't understand is that Wootton pArents will always value SAT scores over emotional health.

If wootton parents had to choose over a kid with a high Sat score or a high number number of volunteer hours a Wooton parent will choose SAT score over family values 80% of the time.

Kids are popping adderall to keep their parents happy, it's pathetic.

It's a toxic environment.

higher pressure = higher scores

lower pressure = lower scores

To close off this thread.

OP needs easy commute to Germantown, good public schools and conveniences. Three schools that were recommended in Bethesda, North Potomac and Germantown based on OP's needs were Whitman, QO and NW.

Why was there a discussion inserted about Churchill and Wootton?

Why the hell is whitman on here? Whitman is not even near germantown or even on the same side of the county! QO NW and Wootton are the only ones the OP should be considering. I would say more QO or Wootton because NW just does not appeal to me but maybe some people would be fine sending their kids there.

I am a Germantown resident. The way MCPS policies are going, your best bet is to buy in Bethesda and commute to Germantown. The commute is not bad because you are going against traffic. Poolesville is hicks town. Absolutely not worth it. And with the kind of money you want to spend, there is no reason to compromise and buy in Rockville etc.

At this point, for commute, home values, conveniences, schools (regardless of MCPS policies) the best bet is Bethesda. 3 million is a good amount to get an amazing house in Bethesda and pretty good affluent schools with an academically high performing demographic.

We like Germantown because of conveniences and our very affordable and luxurious SFH. We also like our neighborhood. We were not impacted by MCPS policies because of all three of our kids went to/going to magnet schools. I have one senior left in Poolesville now.

The RM area has a lot of nice homes between Rockville and 270. Walkable to downtown Rockville. RM has a mix of students, so that it doesn't feel like you are in a high SES bubble. Germantown is only 15 minutes away up 270 without traffic. I think it is a good compromise.

I'm not understanding how changes to MCPS policies will make a difference whether or not OP buys a home in Bethesda or near Germantown? And which MCPS policies are changing exactly? I know the curriculum is going to change, but I don't know of any major policies that will affect certain schools only.
