Education needs to be localized, not federalized or even run by states or huge counties. I know they might like the power trip but it’s worse for the kids and teachers. And education in general. I hope common core is shown the door. |
And why is that? Care to elaborate? What are your credentials in public education? |
| MCPS Middle School writing is an embarrassment. I cannot believe this is the standard of education of a first world country. |
You do it at 8am or 4pm via PTA offerings. |
I agree. MCPS split in 4 sections would be better able to cater to the needs of those communities better. The Pass-The-Low-Proficiency bar is too big a challenge for a third of the students and underserves the other third of the students. Some areas of the big county have the typical bell curve of students, other areas have more right tail, and other areas have more left tail. It's not working currently, and frustrating students, parents, teachers and principals. Overcrowding issues could be better handled if localized as well. Managing 25 disparate high school pyramids the way MoCo has been, especially the last 6 years has been a big disappointment. Such a shame. |
That is correct. Obama thunk up Common Core federal standards because he did not like how Mississippi schools had lower standards than other states' testing standards. So he federalized the standards, any state that signed up gets federal funds for test scores above a proficiency level as deemed by Common Core/Dept of Edu. Massachussetts, unlike Maryland and certainly unlike MCPS, took a look at these standards and increased frequency of testing in EVERY grade of 1-11 and said, "wait a minute, most of our school districts have high standards than Common Core. Not good, no thanks." Virginia did not sign up either. Maryland signed up, and various school districts fell in line with asinine curricula with zero flexibility school over school. And here we are. In addition to 1000s of yearly ESOL illegal immigrants entering various grades each year and tiny magnet programs we have hurt our good MD school districts and schools. |
