As far as pre-med, W&L is top notch and as others have noted they put a lot of resources into supporting students efforts to get into and succeed in Med School.

At the end of the day, I don't think your son can go wrong with any of his choices. Go to whichever school feels right.

Oh, and as for the fraternity scene at W&L - there is essentially a house for everyone. And even those who don't join fraternities still have social outlets through clubs as well as with with friends, teammates, and classmates who are in houses. As for the cost, most of the cost is actually room and board which you are going to be paying whether you live on campus or in a house.

W&L seems like the perfect college for intellectually incurious, UMC, basic, conservative, white kids and douchey lax bros.

I'm extremely liberal, but I can tell you W&L is not at all like this. I left very impressed with the school and its resources, as well as the kindness and intelligence of the students. Yes, greek life is central, but greek life is central at places like MIT and Dartmouth as well.

Then I’d absolutely choose UVA. My brother went to Davidson and I never got the impression there is much of a science focus.

Davidson grad here. The above poster is incorrect. Davidson has historically had a very strong pre-med program. Many of my Davidson classmates became doctors.

OP, please think about what you're asking. UVA is in-rank with at least two Ivies. It's highly regarded throughout the world. It exhibits astounding alumni loyalty. And compared to most high-ranking US universities, it might as well be free.

Davidson and W&L are a notch above Elon or something.

Is this question serious?

Yes, the poster is delusional. See http://colleges.startclass.com/compare/3052-4437-4445/Davidson-College-vs-University-of-Virginia-Main-Campus-vs-Washington-and-Lee-University

Newsweek names UVA as one of the new 25 Ivy Elities. http://www.newsweek.com/americas-25-new-elite-ivies-108771. UVA is also known as a public ivy.

I have a TJ kid who is interested in SLACs as a better fit for him than larger universities (smaller classes, smaller student body, more interaction with professors, etc). WM is his in state option. Davidson is high on his list and checks all the boxes, along with Oberlin, Wake Forest (not technically SLACs, but have programs that appeal), Bowdoin, Swarthmore and Haverford. Zero interest in UVA. Feels WL would be a bad fit socially (too conservative, too Greek). If the financial aid from Davidson looks good, it’s a definite option. If not, we can’t justify the cost over WM.

Davidson has excellent academics, and a great reputation with employers, grads schools, etc. I frankly don’t care what my neighbors think. Good fit for my kid is more important than bragging rights.

Did you check the link? Because they apparently don’t any more.

If you google the “elite ivy” link, you might notice two things. One— it is from 2006. So a bit outdated. Second, Davidson is also one of the 25 “elite Ivys” listed. Doh.

Davidson is a great school. As for W&L, I wouldn't be so quick to write it off as too conservative or too Greek without stopping for a visit, and it is on the way to Davidson.

Lol....public ivy. Seems like you’re very proud of that term. You do realize that nobody takes it seriously because it was concocted by some hack as a marketing ploy to sell his book over thirty years ago.
