That reputation may be in your alternative facts based reality. No one actually cares what an anonymous poster who hides behind the keyboard says. Rest of the country knows it as the top public school for science & tech. Proud of having my DC going next year, and thankful to fairfax county school board and everyone else who keeps this great option available for hard working kids. |
It's attitude like your that makes parents blind to what kids are going thru and what they are doing - not my kids, never my kids. |

PP it's really weird how obsessed you seem to be with rambling about TJ's reputation and kids and parents being so awful.... is there something else you might want to spend time on? We get that you hate the school, you think everyone believes all kids there are cheaters, the reputation stinks, etc. Well, guess what - a lot of us are there now for better or worse and our DCs aren't cheating - just learning a lot and having fun doing it, even though it's not easy.
to the family joining TJ, welcome. No school is perfect and teenagers make mistakes (as even adults do), but you and your DC will find that the school is very open to your DC creating their own experience there. So many science and math tracks. 100s of clubs to choose from- your DC should explore as many as possible in the early part of the year. Sports participation is great - not a problem for even a new player to make many teams - and the team spirit is amazing. The other groups that draw many kids are marching band, orchestra, drama, Crew, and Model UN. Even if feeling shy, DC should make early effort to meet different groups. The kids really are nice to each other. No cliques around popularity or clothes or nonsense, because they come from all over and most don't have that many friends coming in with them. The favorite dance of the year is a ball where the orchestra plays the music and kids try to waltz. There's always food at every event. The year opens with a back to school bash with fun and food trucks before the first home football game. The football team historically loses but that doesn't mean anyone cheers any less for them. And for parents - it is different. The schedule is different. The block classes are different. There are different rules and prerequisites. Tj has its own intranet run by the kids. Get involved as much as you can - with the ptsa or some other group, so you are there and can see and hear what is going on. This will help if your DC is a silent type. And then you will hear about any issues and know the real story about them and everything else that is going on at the school. It's frankly an amazing place, though not perfect. |
Are you a TJ parent? you don't sound like one. If you have a child that goes to TJ then I find it highly amusing you call the school as "cheater school", even if your child is not cheating. That shows a lack of self respect for something you or your child are associated with. If you are a TJ parent then you will be concerned and you will raise issues, discuss solutions, but will not indulge in name calling. You appear to be someone who has no connection with the school whatsoever, and finds happiness from making derogatory comments. |
everyone knows about TJ's cheating culture. where have you been??

+1 Welcome! |
Thank you. We are looking forward to it. |
Let's not get carried away, shall we?The rest of the country by and large hasn't heard of TJ and couldn't care less . The only top public high school that may be widely known all over the country is Stuyvesant. In terms of actual "top high school", lots of schools all over that are far less materially endowed regularly beat TJ at all kinds of competitions--check out Mira Loma, Troy, Westfield, Stevenson, Monta Vista, Lexington to name a few. And most of them aren't magnets. |
+1000 But no one masters test taking like TJ does. |
This picture is too rosy but I still agree with most of it . TJ is an amazing high school and as any other HS, it also has fair share of the issues. Most of the kids in TJ are honest and work hard to achieve the success in life. Some are bad apples, it could also be due to over involvement of parents pressurizing the kids to achieve more without realizing the limits of their own kid's ability. Every school administration tries to suppress the news that could adversely affect the school's reputation and the cheating issue could be one of them. IMO, it's a problem to tackle collaboratively with school staff, parents and kids. We all need to teach our kids the value of ethical behavior vs unethical success. Cheating is real and it needs to be addressed. We can't just ignore or sweep it under the rug.

| This area is obsessed with a TJ. The pp who said most of the country knows nothing about TJ is correct. Once their kids go off to college, mostly to UVA, the TJ parents will see how ridiculous their obsession was. Just like AAP parents discover in high school that plenty of non AAP kids do as well or better than the AAP ones. I say let the TJ parents be proud of their kids, and let the school handle the cheating (or not). To each his/her own. |
NoVa is obsessed with TJ. |
| I know a TON of kids accepted to TJ this year, that refused, because of the cheating - they simply do not want to be associated with that environment. That, and the idea that it is not a school for kids with any social abilities. TJ is going to end up giving themselves quite a reputation. |
Define TON. |

As in is it a few large children whose weight adds up to 2000 lbs? Seriously, we will all know the stats of admissions from the regular pool and waitlist soon enough for real facts. (And If this post is a grown up saying they know a lot of kids and their direct decisionmaking - well, that's kind of creepy, particularly because 14 year olds don't tend to talk a lot to grown ups, not even their own parents) or (if this is a child posting about the reasons other children say they got into Tj but aren't going - hmmm - maybe they didn't really get into TJ after all ...).
In any event, there is also a new principal who has pledged to look at these issues. If you actually know the school you would know that already. - well that's And the new Principal has |
