Can't understand how DS (1st grade) did so poorly on NNAT2.

111 - 75%. We probably don't have chance for AAP ?

Definitely not. NAAT just offers a piece of information(maybe only smaller part). The final decision may combine with CogAt test results and teachers's evaluation, etc.
I know some kids go to AAP until fourth grade or even sixth grade.

At least in our AAP center, I heard from the other parents that it is sort of chaotic. All kinds of kids are there, not only academic advanced ones. As long as you want to, your kids will always get in by different referral. Some kids are forced to be sent in AAP by parents.
AAP is not that great as we expected. Just relax.

What is GBRS? Thanks

One of my kids got a 110. He's in (first round). His Cogat was 140 and his GBRS a 15. The NNAT counts the least of the three scores. If you are shocked by the score because of how your kid presents, your kid will likely do very well on the Cogat. If you're not shocked, then I'm guessing your child may not do that well on the Cogat. I'm only saying this because of the people that I know - myself included - that were shocked at the low score on the NNAT, it was because of things their kid has said, connections made, knowledge expressed, etc. that indicated the child was probably pretty bright.

I am just a little surprised. She read very well, almost finish the 2nd grade requirement of reading, so I expect a little higher but I actually don't want to push her. If she is not at the advanced level, it is totally fine. Not every child is gifted. Lol. I honestly think the result gives me some idea about how well she is.

Thank you. I actually don't want to push her. If she is not at that level then it is better for her to not join aap. She can focus on whatever she likes, piano and art or acting lol

Anonymous wrote:Just got DS's NNAT2 scores and I am really surprised. (DS is in first grade.) He scored a 104 = 60th percentile.

DS has always been the smartest kid around -- reading fully not long after his third birthday; highest math and reading groups at school; maxed the chart on that reading and math test they gave in K; etc. etc. All his teachers (even his piano teacher) have always commented on how bright he is, how quickly he learns, etc.

What gives? Are we sunk for AAP? Should we consider prepping the next test? We didn't talk about this one at all and maybe he didn't understand the importance of getting the questions right.

Ugh, this is all so new to me, I went to private from K-12 so none of these standardized tests until high school...

what did his violin teacher say?

She caucused with the tennis pro and they both agreed he can probably use another few hours of Mandarin study per night.

Discussed with DH and now he is committed to taking DS to Chinese school every sunday. Otherwise DS will be left behind. We didn't leave China to have DS unable to support us.

I'm trying not to stress knowing this is only one test but now I am curious. Seems like a raw score of 36/48 would be higher than 60%. Did more students do very well this year or is this average for fcps? I am new to this so pardon my cluelessness. ?

The percentile that a raw score generates is based on your child's age in months. So two kids who get the same # correct can have very different scores if they are, say, 10 months apart.

Her reading level isn't what I'm talking about. Once a kid can decode the words, he/she can essentially read nearly all texts. I'm talking about things your child says that makes you stop and say to yourself, "What.Did.You.Just.Say????" If you have a child like that, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure if I'm too relaxed as a parent by the standards of this board, or if I'm doing it right. My DD is in 1st grade and just got her scores back, and got a 120. I was barely aware she was being given this test, much less prepping her for it. I suppose it is because I went through Gen Ed in Fairfax County many years ago and, with hindsight and having a great career now, realize that AAP and getting into TJ are not requirements for success. I don't mean this to come off as holier than thou, but the idea of test prepping a 1st grader is surprising to me.

DD is smart, but she wouldn't do her homework (such as it is in 1st grade) without being forced, and getting her to remember things like bringing home her lunchbox is a coin flip. They are kids, let them be kids. Gen Ed in Fairfax is not a sentence to an unfulfilling life, it is still better than 95% or more of the education being offered around the country. Your kids will be fine regardless.

YES! I suppose we shouldn't have been surprised our youngest did so well on the standardized tests. Now we just need to get her to use her powers for good rather than sarcasm. We call her the Evil Genius (not to her face) sometimes when she's being a total shit while also displaying insight beyond what a normal 7-year-old would come up with. The text DH sent with the pic of her NNAT score said, "this explains sooooo much".

120, not bad at all. It is ranking of superior. I personally cannot see the difference between 135 and 120 for a seven years old.
