Just got DS's NNAT2 scores and I am really surprised. (DS is in first grade.) He scored a 104 = 60th percentile.
DS has always been the smartest kid around -- reading fully not long after his third birthday; highest math and reading groups at school; maxed the chart on that reading and math test they gave in K; etc. etc. All his teachers (even his piano teacher) have always commented on how bright he is, how quickly he learns, etc. What gives? Are we sunk for AAP? Should we consider prepping the next test? We didn't talk about this one at all and maybe he didn't understand the importance of getting the questions right. Ugh, this is all so new to me, I went to private from K-12 so none of these standardized tests until high school... |
Another ability test, cogAt, will be administered in the second grade. The scores will be used to screen for AAP as well. DS can also take the WISC-V. GBRS (rated by teacher) is also very important. |
Same happened here. I didn't think DD was the brightest kid in grade but up there. Then I figured she'd do well on cogat and did worse. Taking her for WISC, not just for aap, but to see if it shows the same- maybe the subscores can show something different |
Where do you take these tests? At school? Or do you have to schedule them privately? |

Read it all. Just sad. |
He wasn't "reading fully" in the way that is expected including comprehension both retelling and analyzing a story.. And the bar for the highest math and reading groups in 1st grade, well it's not really that high and a lot of kids can be in those groups. All teachers comment kids are bright. I mean what else are they going to say. It could be that your DS doesn't test well or some other factors. You can certainly pursue other testing. But maybe, just maybe, no, he isn't going to be in AAP. |
Same here. DD is one of smartest in her class. Always amazes me how quick she learns, always heard compliments for her intelligence, yet scored 118 in NNAT2 administered at her school. Honestly her score was a surprise. I wonder how kids who scored in 99th percentile are like.
If she doesn't get into AAP, it is what it is. But I can't get over thinking maybe I should have prepped her better just to be familiar with the test itself. |
Did you receive the score in the mail or from the school? We haven't received DC's score yet. |
My child had the same situation. I think it was because he was a six year old little boy. We had very little computer time and he probably just spaced out and clicked and had fun on the NNAT. We did prep a little (just with analogies apps and puzzle games) for the CoGat and that was much higher. You are not sunk. If AAP is the best educational environment for your child then you have many different ways you will able to show that.
Also, I would say that for some kids, they don't fit in with the Gen Ed kids so being in AAP is really the best thing for their personal and social development. If it is truly the best place for a child, and it's not just a desire to "get in AAP' and "be the best" then you have to do what is best for your child. |
Similar situation on the NNAT here - my kid was 6, took it cold with no prep or discussion whatsoever and I feel like DC was maybe just playing around on the computer for it. I was trying not to care about AAP, but when I got the score back, I thought: ok, so I guess AAP is a no, and I moved on with my life. I also decided I wasn't going to parent refer for various reasons. DC also took the Cogat cold with no prep but did much better (in pool). I received the score a few days before the packets were due, and then I scrambled to do the optional parent questionnaire. If possible, would try not to stress about NNAT or AAP in general but PP have given good advice about the various parts of the process. To the person who asked, the WISC is privately administered. My kiddo will attend now AAP, but I don't think this means DC is smarter than anyone else and I don't want DC to think that. Maybe certain things come easier to DC than others, but there a lot of "smart" people in this world even those who aren't "book smart." I know a lot of the DCUM community disagrees with me on these points! |
I didn't think results were out until end of May. |
DD got a 109 on NNAT, went on to score 134 on COGAT and get into AAP, where she is doing great. |
Check the test. A friend's DC scored unexpectaedly low and it was because he bubbled in a pattern so it looked like a zigzag down the page. |
It was done in computers |
One bad score can be an accident.
Several similar scores are an accurate portrayal of a student's abilities under test conditions. |
