Current 8th graders at NCS, applying out for 9th?

Crickets? anyone? or was this just another attempt to bash NCS. I'm starting to think people with major sour grapes come here once a year to stir the pot.

I doubt that many are leaving. Sounds like someone just came up with the number 28 in their head and posted it to start some rumor.

Not true. The number 28 is accurate as was reported by multiple NCS parents through social conversations around town. I myself heard it from a current 2021 NCS parent. At least 28 notified the school of their intent to apply out. I do not know how many were sucessful or how many are leaving as I have not and will not ask my friends that question as I thinks it is intrusive. I didnt solicit the original information about how many were applying out and Im not going to go arund asking who is actually leaving either. At some point this spring and summer those conversations will become cocktail party chatter.

I'm sure if there were a lot of girls who actually decided to leave it would already be cocktail party chatter. If nearly all of the girls are staying, it's just not all that interesting.

NP here. I have a daughter in this class, and she confirmed the 28 number. As the PP mentioned, the girls' families had to notify the school if they were applying elsewhere, and the school then asked the girls to do a shadow day with a student at the US, so everyone pretty much knows who applied out. My DD reports that many of the girls have decided not to leave. We have a long history with the school, and this is an unusual class -- both in the social dynamics and in the number of girls who applied out.

Also have a daughter in this class. She says 8 are leaving. Two for boarding.

I am prior poster. Make that 3 to boarding.

27 girls assuredly applied out and 11 of those girls are confirmed as leaving with an additional 4 girls on boarding school and local school wait lists.
Approx 10 girls have decided to stay including 2 of the 4 prominent athelete (1athelete off to Visitation, the other off to Maret).

This exodus has nothing to do with the 'bad class' moniker attached to this class for PR reasons.
This has to do with an unfortunate cultural change in the middle school that is driving parents away. The teachers and administrators have taken the middle school way left of center., religion and conservatism are non existent which is surprising for a school associated with the Cathedral.
Nobody wants liberalism (or conservatism) forced upon their children which is why 3 of the girls are headed to public schools (why pay for the Animal Farm approach).
The lower school at NCS is fabulous (nurturing, kind teachers, simple school uniform).
The middle school is Lord of Flies (overtly liberal and opinionated teachers, aggressive academic goals, limited oversight, and no restrictions on clothing). It causes the cliques to form and self segregation ensues.
The girls are given unlimited freedom and are encouraged to find and express themselves. The school purposely gives the girls enough rope to hang themselves and then realishes the opportunities to teach them 'life lessons" when the rope tightens around their neck.
Parents have begged the school to extend the school uniforms to the middle school and have been repeatedly told to pound salt.

I hope this is a wake up call for the administrators. The middle school has drastically changed for the worse. Of note, 3 of the confirmed transfers are daughters of parents who attended the Cathedral Schools and have long histories with the Close, including the daughter of one of NCS's most illustrious alumni. That says it all, old Washington isn't buying the Kool Aid.

If our family had applied out I would be insulted with all of this score keeping. Why can't people be allowed some privacy with their choices? Many families prefer to keep things quiet as long as possible.

+100 Please remember these are kids and their reasons for switching schools is usually quite personal. Try and be respectful of their privacy!

NP, but like other PPs, so glad to have avoided this mess.

My DD is part of this class, and wow. So much misinformation here ! What could the admin do differently? There's a dress code and the girls don't run amok.

Really!!!?? My DD is apart the class and this is so not true I don't know where to start. Dress code for middle school, parents wanting uniforms an over generalization. Liberal teachers, news flash, most teachers are liberal and public school will be the same in that respect. Aggressive academic goals, hardly. Actually I am not going to waste any more energy to this topic, not worth the time. People can believe what they want.
