This forum topic alone is misleading some to think that applying out equals leaving. The number of girls APPLYING out is higher than last year's class. Various reasons girls APPLY out at NCS. This year's class 8th grade class has a few undesirable social elements that may point to the increase in numbers of girls trying out their options. In the end few will leave and this topic will not convince the now accepted girls who want to attend, holding an offer to NCS to give up spot for those on wait list anymore than the threads on a few issues at Holton will not convince the accepted girls at Holton to give up their spot. NCS is a great all girl's school with stellar academics and top ranked in both DC area and throughout the US. Parents and girls applying to our school know this. There are no bells and whistle advertisements or shortage of applicants applying. True NCS may have some non compatible classes socially as well as from this thread unhappy parents. But what we also know, despite some claims of dissatisfaction they don't leave. The reality of who leaves and stays will be a fact next week and I promise it will be nowhere near the hype given to this thread and admissions isn't sweating bullets of concern because they have plenty applicaants to fill the openings. NCS isn't for all. NCS parents who think that their concerns do not matter, fill out your parent survey finally due today after two months. I am pretty sure they want 100% participation because we are better when our whole communities voices are expressed. Signed a Satisfied NCS parent!!

So happy we didn't choose this school

We love NCS! Daughter is happy, thriving academically, and she has many friends who are also kind to one another and to their classmates. Overall the parent community in her grade is also nice and kind and I could tell from the start that most of the parents are also on board with their daughters being kind and so far it really works. There is a sense that we are all in this together. Can't imagine her anywhere else.

NCS isn't for everyone and if the above bothers you then it probably isn't the best match for you compared to the school you did choose.

So what was the final tally? How many 8th graders are leaving?

The number "28" has been bandied about but no one knows for certain how many girls went through with submitting apllications to other schools in the end. Many girls were ceratinly talkign about applying out. The girls (according to their parents) want to leave for a variety of reasons, including: atmosphere too intense both intellectually and socially; girls want less rigorous academics for high school; girls want a change of social scene because have been there since Beauvoir; unhappy as that class has some unkind socal dynamics; boarding school has always been the plan. The interesting part IMO is that many of the girls who are considered "popular" by their peers or "more social/into appreances/into boys" are many of the grils looking for a change.

Several are applying to boarding schools and that in and of itself is not unusual but the numbers applying to bs this year are higher than normal.

I do know a surprising large group (8 or so) wants to tranfer to Visi. They see it as slightly less intense/rigorous and yet still great school. That is a really unusual move.

The rumors flying around are fairly accurate in this case and I think its because its the girls who want to leave, and those girls' parents, who started most of the talk.

+1 current 8th grade accepted to Visi. Daughter deciding to stay.

Score: 1 staying, 27 unknown (assuming 28 is the correct #for applications out)

Score: 2 staying, I do not know the true number applying out but a few I know applied to Holton. It is true this group of eight graders are cliquey and some exclusive especially the girls who have been together since Beauvoir. My DD is hoping some do actually leave and looking forward to the new girls. The school she is accepted to, their 8th grade has drama too.

I hope the cliquey ones don't come to Holton. My daughter in 8th is excited to meet some nice new girls who will join the class. There is definitely a cliquey element in the Holton 8th grade class too (Primary Day crowd) but also a bigger group of sweet kids so we want to add to that. I know the Holton admitted students reception is tonight so maybe some will make their decision soon. I have a feeling that anyone who is likely to leave for Visi already knows they are leaning that way since they learned of admission earlier than some other schools.

In the end, I'm sure whoever decides to stay at NCS will be fully committed and the climate will change. New parents should not worry because every class has some kids who are more cliquey and many more who are very open and friendly. I think in high school they are less like that than middle school so change it a very good thing if you've been in one place for a while.

Interesting. I did not know that. I know some nice girls in that 8th grade Holton class though and they seem happy. I do know the current 7th grade class at Holton is very very clique and the "popular" girls are already heavily into boys and revelaing clothes and hooking up.

Please tell me you're kidding.

Sorry but I am not kidding. The 7th grade at Holton has a group of "popular" girls who are very "advanced" socially and love to show it off by posting pics. If you have a 7th grader at another private in the area just ask your child.

My US dd cant stand the "sevvies" at Holton. The shenanigans including the requirements to have Scout bags and other social status items almost made us choose a different school for our younger DD.

My current 8th grader loves a lot of the sevvies so they can't all be like that. She agrees there are some girls she thinks are not the nicest in that class but she's very quick to point out that there is also a large group of great girls too.

Girls like that are typically weeded out by upper school.

What does that mean? Counseled out?
Anonymous
"Counseled out" means the the discussion is initiated by the school (perhaps you) regarding your DC future at that school.
It's sort of a hint that things aren't working out and she/he would find "greater success" elsewhere.
Anonymous
NP here. We are told from several parents of those applying out that its about the bullying. There's not racism etc. The girls are tired getting beat up.

Small sample size, but every one of the 5 NCS families I know was been looking to exit to other schools for a few years running. They all say things like "NCS is great but ...." A couple have succeeded in getting admitted at another school after multiple tries, but the others are still at NCS and planning to continue to try for spots at other schools. Totally a small sample, and covers 3 different grades, so not indicative of problems in one particular grade. Makes me wonder though if the number who leave each year is less determined by those who want to leave, and more determined by how many can get admitted at their more preferred schools in any given year.

Crickets? anyone? or was this just another attempt to bash NCS. I'm starting to think people with major sour grapes come here once a year to stir the pot.
Anonymous
Wouldn't they still be waiting to hear from certain schools, like boarding schools?
Anonymous
28 is certainly excessive. It would be unprecedented. In previous years maybe 3-5.
Anonymous
Bump. Any actually leaving?
