Why is it O.K. for liberals to casually use slurs like redneck, trailer trash, flyover state?

Anonymous
OP, why is it okay for whites to refer to themselves as rednecks (Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy etc) but not okay for liberals to use it?

Haven't read the whole thread but the answer that it is not okay and I and other liberals I know make a point of saying that. In fact, I make a point of saying it on DCUM.

And it would help if you wouldn't make broad generalizations about people based on their demographic group while you are complaining about people making broad generalizations based on their demographic group.

Liberals use it to insult. Your parents should have taught you insulting people on purpose is not okay. And even if it happens accidentally, it's polite to apologize. You're welcome.

I think the realization that people who don't know you judge you harshly really does suck.

People who don't care about you (whether they know you or not) don't matter.

Except when they're casually using slurs like redneck, trailer trash and flyover state, apparently.

I think elevating a boor like Trump to the highest office in the land has lowered the bar on discourse. But I've never encountered anyone who talks like this in real life.

Lowbrow commentary seems to be reserved for forums like this one and social media and crops up all across the political spectrum.

It's a free country. Using slurs tells me a lot more about the person who uses them than about any redneck.

Please don't pin the level of public discourse on Trump. Take some personal responsibility, for crying out loud. Once.

I'm the PP and will agree with you on everything except who to pin it on. I hope the PEOTUS will take some personal responsibility for making lowbrow commentary commonplace and stop engaging in it.

Obviously, it was central to his success, so no doubt he won't be giving it up. I can't say I like it, but if you're one who did and supported him in it, all I've got on the labels in the original post is a big ::SHRUG::

Are you seriously telling me he was the only one who participated in this free-for-all? You're truly blind, my friend. Regardless of whom or what I support or don't support, I witnessed deplorable behavior on both fronts. However, I'm not surprised you didn't. You're not the first person with selective hearing, nor are you the last, sadly.

OP -- you Trumpsters are great at diverting attention from Trump's racism. Why not focus on that? He's going to be the President, not people on DCUM

It's not okay. But I don't hear anyone on the right denouncing the hate and racism the right constantly directs against minorities and the disenfranchised.

I am really not your friend.

You're right that it's on all sides and I wish it would stop, but Trump set the tone. That tone was carried and echoed and chanted while he smiled and encouraged it. To make sure it didn't die down, he took time from his busy schedule as PEOTUS to go on a Thank You tour.

If you support a guy riding a wave of insults, you gotta expect you'll get wet.

So, when conservatives use "rednieck" it is used as a term of endearment, is that correct? IMO, it is PC culture run amuck.

Not really, but it's more of the factual statement. Rednecks used to be the backbone of this nation. Unless you were raised to believe bread was growing on trees, you know that without a farmer you'd be hungry and naked.

If you Trumpettes are going to be such crybabies about language people use, maybe it's time to find yourselves a safe space.
