Why is it O.K. for liberals to casually use slurs like redneck, trailer trash, flyover state?

Breitbart used the term flyover country way back in 2009.

FYSA: conservative elites are likely the ones who coined the terms redneck, flyover country, and white trash...to distinguish themselves from the less-than whites (since the conservative elites are white and live in the same red states). Now they use the terms to manipulate the lower-class by saying the liberal elites believe they are dim-witted trash. It's quite befuddling given that liberals champion the safety net and work in the social service/anti-poverty advocacy arena. I suppose they might learn what's what under a Trump administration with republican control of the congress. If they decimate the safety net, destroy Medicare and SS, make health care worse, decrease benefits, and harm the economy, then maybe they will understand which party cares about others and which party only cares about the wealthy.

The term redneck derives from people who worked outside all day and the backs of their necks were red. Most I knew growing up considered it a badge of honor to put in an honest day of work.

White trash and flyover state are certainly more rooted in a derogatory colloquialism. Just like libtard etc are.

I personally do not use any of these terms and do not know anyone who uses them other than this forum.

I think it undermines an argument when one resorts to such terms.

My mother grew up outside of Memphis and is not a liberal. She regularly describes Elvis as PWT.

I heard the time flyover country way back in the 90s. Or even 80s. And I'm from there.

Redneck is typically code for small minded, poorly educated racist/homophobic gun-toting moron. If the shoe fits...
Having said that, it isn't PC. Or, it wasn't unti Trump won the election by telling people that PC nonsense shouldn't be tolerated. As such, game on, no?

Actually redneck arises from slavery when the white overseers had to be out in the fields with the slaves and developed red necks from the sun

Same here. In twenty years of adulthood I've only heard one person say "w.t." in person. I told her off and we aren't friends. I'm a highly educated liberal and nearly all my friends are too.

Sure you are....

Yes, this is how my dad described it to me in 1960s Scaggsville. I didn't grow up in a trailer park, but I did grow up right next to one. We didn't call people trailer trash though. I didn't hear that term until college.

I don't use any of these terms. I'm a flaming liberal. I am, however, extremely familiar with the terms that many rural people use to put down others. I hear more put-downs from my relatives and old neighbors than I ever do among my current coworkers and friends. They are angry and they aren't quiet about it.

I voted against Trump and he has already called me stupid and dumb over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over and over and over one over....
I'll stop name calling when he does.

The only people who I've heard use the term redneck are DH's relatives who are staunch Republicans in the middle south and they use the term proudly to describe themselves and their way of life (which, is essentially working class, semi-rural area, big focus on family life). They also have confederate flag bumper stickers, so there's that. But they are the only people I hear use the term regularly. Friends and family in the DC-area don't use it. Most of us find the term pretty offensive - we're all liberals.

I have known plenty of people who call themselves rednecks! So I am not sure that's a slur. Unless it occupies a strange place were one can self-identify as redneck but if called a redneck it's a slur.

Trailer trash is not a nice term. But is used to designate lower class whites.

Flyover is shorthand for the states between the coasts.

To be fair, Trump has an extensive (but not creative) vocabulary when it comes to insults. He has also called you, me and 1/2 of theAmerica people, plus 3 million, losers and his enemies.

Plus, he insulted all of these people in 2016 (just on Twitter). Why is it ok for Trump to casually slur... basically everyone?

When we read a negative post about conservative voting patterns, religious beliefs, institutions of higher learning, etc that also include derogatory terms, we're pretty confident a conservative didn't write the comments.

Well, it's not ok. But the premise is that conservatives don't use slurs or derogatory terms. And we know that is flatly incorrect. So, if you're going to call out one group, you call out both. Or at least recognize it's not ok for anyone to use such terms.

I'm an extreme liberal who grew up in what you are referring to as a "flyover state" and I have relatives who are what you would probably refer to as a "redneck" and "trailer trash" and I have never used those terms.

However, my BIL who lives in a the heart of Appalachia and is a staunch gun-toting conservative will use the term redneck all the time. I've also heard him use the term trailer trash as well.

Sounds like you need to check your stereotypes.
