Baby born 5 months early

Mine were born at 33 weeks and 6.5 days but told that the staff would treat them as 33 weeks in deciding which tests to run, etc. (I was trying so hard to make it until midnight, ). If that is true here, someone would think 40 - 21 = 19 weeks early, closer to 5 months than 4 months.

That poor child, and what a horrible thing for the parents.

I don't even know how that child can possibly come out of this with a good outcome. I think this might be extraordinary/extreme measures to even attempt to save.

Interesting article about early preterm babies. Interestingly, black girls have the best chance for survival: http://healthland.time.com/2011/05/27/baby-born-at-21-weeks-survives-how-young-is-too-young-to-save/

Birthweight is apparently a huge factor, and if the baby weighs a pound, as the parents reported, that's substantial.

I've definitely heard NICU nurses referred to "wimpy white boy syndrome," but I agree that this story is unlikely to end well.

Mom of 24 weaker winmpy white boy. My doctor told me I should of had a black girl. He was obviously kidding, but it is true that black female babies are the strongest. I will pray for this tiny little girl named Dakota. She will need lots of prayers.

The baby was probably at 23-24 weeks. A 1-pound baby is a micro-preemie for sure. The best of luck and health to them.

Born in early January. Not December

No it wasn't. They can keep saying it, but it doesn't make it true. The 1 lb part could be true. But not the 5 months early.

The brother of one of my DH's closest friends growing up was born between 20 and 21 weeks gestation and weighed only 15 oz. This was about 40 years ago too. He is a lawyer who went to Ivy League with absolutely no issues from his birth.

I'd say the technology is a lot better now than it was back then. She stands a chance of a good outcome.

Dude, I don't know what to tell you. But it happened. His mom was a practicing physician at the time so maybe she had access to specialized care? But my DH was there, sorry.

This story gives me hope. My sister's water just broke at 20 weeks and we are praying she can hold off a few more weeks.

This absolutely did not happen. This has never happened. You should speak with a neonatologist to confirm. Because this never happened.

Miracles do happen. Today and in the past. Modern medicine is wonderful and also admits that sometimes miracles happen.
