Most people are upset about the security costs of $1 million per day. If Melania decided to live in the country or suburbia, no one would care because the cost to taxpayers would be much lower. There are no laws prohibiting this. Congress can introduce a new law going forward that president's family must reside in the white house or pay their own security (and if they don't pay, then they don't get the free security and they reside outside of the WH at their own risk). The law should also set up a maximum amount of travel days so we are not dealing with a situation where a president is going to another city every weekend and costing millions of dollars in security.
