What would a 2 bedroom condo cost?

This is silly. Spend any amount of time in NC and you will see the political scene is neither awful nor an influence on your daily life.

Spot on.

DCUM hates on the south dontcha know.

I just went to a wedding in NC right outside of Charlotte, the minister said so many awful things people actually left the event. So while NC is changing, might even go blue, it's still way too conservative.

Yikes! What could he say at a WEDDING that was so bad that people were leaving?????

I hated it there! My friend moved there and I went to visit her. Not for me. She loves it tho

Would love to hear what you hated about it, because in 30+ years of visiting family there, yours is the only negative opinion I've ever heard!

Zero diversity, way too conservative. Beach in some areas is just ok, Traffic stinks,,,,,

Lewis is more on the bay.

Agree with you on diversity and traffic, but not so sure about conservative (at least if we're talking about downtown Lewes, not surrounding Sussex County).

Easton is a real town and a very nice one too. St. Michaels is also great, but it is much smaller in terms of stores/restaurants/businesses. It's a pretty high-end area too, with lots of wealthy people. There are hospitals there too (Easton).

Agree + Oxford, MD. Also Onancock & Cape Charles in VA.

+1 - moved South from DC, and it's far more diverse (in many ways) than the closed city mindset gives it credit for. You will 100% get MORE right wingers but they do not dominate. And frankly most people are so polite that it doesn't even come up in daily life. I am in NC (and our Dem governor is amazing) but would +1 Hilton Head ... BUT ... with the way hurricane season is worsening I would seriously reconsider moving to the actual beach. Look for a nice community within an easy beach drive but far enough inland that your home will not be smack in harm's way. We've been down here 5 years and every year the season is more intense and more damaging.

For those who know Lewes, how is the town configured? In other words, is there a main street, a main beach thoroughfare, a place where most houses are beach rentals, a more suburban area?

My mom lives in the town of Hatteras, NC. She loves it. There are some residents, often early retirees or families who work in DC remotely. I must say it is complete Mayberry and she adores it. She is very active and in her 60s, as are most of the other non-tourism residents besides the WFH families.

My kids spend extra time with her in the summer and it is just wonderful for them. You have to like the beach, though, as that is what there is to do. there are many small homes but few condos.

With climate change worsening rapidly, I would not choose a beach town.

I’m very happy on OBX.

Me, either. Bethany doesn't have bars, really, so it keeps the most obnoxious behavior away. You can go to Rehoboth, Dewey, or OC for that. Otherwise, it's very family oriented. Quaint little shops, nice people, easygoing lifestyle. Perhaps Lewes is similar?

My ILs have moved from Bethany as their kids (inc my DH) visited them once a year, at most. I think they expected lots of visitors, but traffic was bad in the summer and winter was depressing. They’ve now moved to a city where there’s loads to do year-round and we’re looking forward to visiting.

I don't know much about Lewes, but I'm retiring to Bethany.

My parents are considering Bethany. What's it like off-season?

My brother and his wife recently retired to Wilmington, NC and they love it. They are on the south side of the city, just a short drive to several beaches. They have had some experience with one of the hospitals in the city and were very impressed by the care they received. Yes, there are a lot of conservatives there, but SIL says that there are plenty of quiet liberals like herself.

Tell me about Onancock and CC? Does everything really close down in the winter?

Traffic sucks! Unless you have beach access, it's hard to actually go to the beach and park. The Cape is kinda gross for swimming and the beach is rough.

The Delaware beaches are just so gross and also full of ratchet people from Maryland. Gross.

Man you sound insufferable, and miserable.

Lewes has a historic district with a main street that's just a couple of blocks long with small shops/restaurants. The (bay) beach is a half mile or so away from downtown. Most of the houses closest to the beach are rentals/seasonal homes, not as old as the ones downtown. LOTS of new development outside of town.
