Recommend a beach town for retirement...

Just started thinking about this. Would prefer not to be surrounded by similarly situated old and aging. Prefer not Florida. Are there any great beach towns where homes are still relatively affordable and where my kids and grandkids would love to spend a lot of time?

Lewis, Delaware! I guess it depends on your definition of affordable, but it's a great town.

Ok it is Florida but northern FL. Look at Fernandina / Amelia Island, Atlantic Beach & St augustine.

Padre Island, Corpus Christi Tx. Condo for $125k, 3br house $200k, McMansion with canal to park yout boat $400k. Never gets below 60 degrees and no state income tax. Water park on the island and national park down the road.

Traffic sucks! Unless you have beach access, it's hard to actually go to the beach and park. The Cape is kinda gross for swimming and the beach is rough.

You have to pick a town that has a purpose beyond catering to the retired. Those towns tend to be less pretty but often more expensive because they fund their schools. There aren't too many of these.

I don't know much about Lewes, but I'm retiring to Bethany.

Virginia Beach. Lots to do and a reasonably mild climate. Not cheap, but not crazy expensive.

Make sure you're not too far from a good hospital.

+1 And I would also say a decent sized airport in case kids live far away.

The Delaware beaches are just so gross and also full of ratchet people from Maryland. Gross.

What are your politics? Wilmington, NC is a nice small metropolitan area with lots of great smaller beach towns, but I could not stomach living in North Carolina right now because of the awful political scene.

Can you handle winters? What about buying a small house on Martha's Vineyard? You can get a decent house in the middle of the island.
