What are your politics? Wilmington, NC is a nice small metropolitan area with lots of great smaller beach towns, but I could not stomach living in North Carolina right now because of the awful political scene.
This is silly. Spend any amount of time in NC and you will see the political scene is neither awful nor an influence on your daily life.
Spot on.
DCUM hates on the south dontcha know.
+1 - moved South from DC, and it's far more diverse (in many ways) than the closed city mindset gives it credit for. You will 100% get MORE right wingers but they do not dominate. And frankly most people are so polite that it doesn't even come up in daily life. I am in NC (and our Dem governor is amazing) but would +1 Hilton Head ... BUT ... with the way hurricane season is worsening I would seriously reconsider moving to the actual beach. Look for a nice community within an easy beach drive but far enough inland that your home will not be smack in harm's way. We've been down here 5 years and every year the season is more intense and more damaging.
