Betsy DeVos and Vouchers - Yes!!!

Anonymous
Indian poster again. I am fine with Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu schools too. The more the merrier. The main point is that schools and curriculum in general suck here for K-12. Then people will bitch about that international students are being enrolled in the colleges and universities here. Well, duh! They are prepared and we are not.

This. This is what's actually going on here.

They go to parochial schools that cost less than $10,000, many of which are Blue Ribbon schools where kids learn a great deal in a safe environment. What's wrong with that? PP, you sound like a DCPS troll.

+1.

I see this as the proverbial win/win.

Vouchers capped at around $10k and for low income families only should be a policy priority nationwide.

For example, those ESL students so many b*tch about would love to attend fine parochial schools, and those parochial schools would love to welcome them.

What are you going to say when Islamic schools start opening to use the vouchers?

Catholic schools are dying off in the US, and it's not because there's not a market for $10,000/year private schools. Plus the Catholic schools in this area already offer support to needy students. $10,000 vouchers simply are not going to create a market in this area.

I'd have no problem with Islamic schools, assuming they go through same accreditation as all privates must go.

In fact, it could be a good idea to require certain standards for all private schools to access voucher money.

I said it upthread. Currently there are NO accredation standards for the voucher schools in DC. There is at least one school run by the Nation of Islam that is largely voucher-funded. This is a terrible program.

OK, so that's one of the aspects to fix before scaling up the voucher idea.

Call up Ms. DeVos and give her that advice. I'm sure she'll be glad to hear from you.

Most cliche phrase ever used about education.

Guess people keep saying it because it is true.
Or because they have nothing substantial to add. The issue of education really is not too complicated. People just choose not to deal with the real issues.

If it's so simple, then please, enlighten us.

It would be redundant. As long as those of "means" continue to inject their "agenda" into the PUBLIC educational system then we will continue have have a B.S. educational system in this country. Address the issues of those who NEED to have PUBLIC education and set them up for success. If you can pay for a quality education then pay for your education but don't DEMAND that your private aspirations be injected into a public system. Let's start there.

So people 'of means' aren't entitled to use public services? I guess I'll start running red lights and stop paying taxes.

No, what's going on here is my neighbors are leaving for the suburbs because our public schools in DC suck so bad. It's a question of whether we want this city to grow, and it'll grow best without DCPS. So yes to vouchers and school choice.
Anonymous
The Trump site was soliciting whether people support vouchers for homeschooling, so I would suspect that's the direction we are headed.

She herself never attended public school, she's never taught nor been an administrator in a public school, and her kids never attended a public school. Perfect! Let's put her in charge of the nation's public schools. Good, good. Excellent plan.

One more joke, like so many of Trump's appointments to date. Turning the country into an international laughingstock, one step at a time.
