No they don't. There are equitable service requirements to serve private school students under Title 1.

Formula allocations include the count of private school kids.

In any case, Neither has the new SecEd... the concerns aren't about the current law and systems.

To add to this, while DeVos won't be good, she won't be much worse than Duncan. The destruction of public education is a bipartisan movement; the Republicans are just a bit more direct about their loathing for it.

You seem to forget the obvious.

Money doesn't belong to achools. It belongs to taxpayers and to their kids -- so it's great news that they finally may have a say where they want to spend it.

I have to say I'm surprised that the Supreme Court hasn't yet ruled that the public school monopoly, especially in no-charter states like MD, is unconstitutional and ilegal.

Yeah, and then the Supreme Court can address the monopoly on presidents. Only one?! Unconstitutional and illegal!

I think you don't get the difference between a public utility and a monopoly.

Charter schools are "public" schools that aren't bound by the same restrictions as public schools. They don't have to take in all students the way public schools do, they don't have the same oversight public schools do, and they don't have the same levels of accountability public schools do; that's why it's so easy to set them up.

Adding more choice without creating more good choices doesn't help anything.

Where are these magical good schools coming from? Charters and parochial schools haven't been making a big difference and they've been a part of the choice in DC for a while.

There's a lot of hedging in there
-"It may be that the gains in Detroit itself may be the driving force for the gains in the charters in the state" p.14
-"Therefore, Table 3 below, which presents a translation of various outcomes, should be interpreted cautiously." p.15

Also, there's no discussion of self-selection (i.e., which parents move their kids into charter schools?), which seems to play a big role in DC HRCS.

The study also show that charter schools that employ Charter Management Organizations (i.e., the back door to a for-profit corporation from a non-profit charter) are getting smoked by their non-CMO charters. How about banning CMOs with charters?

I think the data is actually quite weak in attempting to show causation.

It's common knowledge among folks who have been following the privatization movement that DeVos has a train of failures behind her (as do virtually all advocates of charters and privatization). I don't think any amount of linking will convince you; in the end, you either believe facts or find alternative ones, and the link you posted suggests you're firmly in the second camp.

Okay. All I know is my local public school has horrible ratings. Folks try hard, just doesn't seem to be working. Some charters appear to provide a better education based on test scores. Just want a good option for my kid that seems to be easily available to richer people. Can't afford to move. Oh well, the discussions here are so black and white.

Where are the moderates? President Obama supports charters. Met one of his top officials once that attended a D.C. private school on a scholarship since he was in a similar spot with his D.C. neighborhood. He was a wonderful person. Why is everything characterized as all good or all bad?

Does research back the lack of nuance in these discussions?
