Metro Transit Police are being criticized for excessive use of force after a video posted Tuesday showed an officer pushing and tripping a high school student, knocking her to the ground, after she refused to throw away a bag of potato chips and a lollipop.

The three-minute video, posted by a member of the District’s Black Lives Matter chapter, shows the 18-year-old in handcuffs, surrounded by three police officers, just outside the fare gates at Columbia Heights station.

I remember bringing a banana in the metro and an officer coming up to me and saying "please discard the banana or we will have to fine you." Bam! Apologized, said I completely forgot (which I did) and threw it away. You know what they said back "Have a nice day." Done and over.

All I see here is complete disrespect and her not complying with the Metro rules or direct security/police orders. My child would NEVER act that way towards a police officer. If she did, I would expect this to happen, apologize to them for her wasting their time with her behavior, make her apologize directly for her behavior, and also make sure she had enough community service hours cleaning the same metro station she completely made a fool of herself in.

But for some reason, there are people in this world that believe that they don't have to comply with rules or orders and can come and go as they please. Then play victim when an officer does anything. I am sure her mom will be just like her and turn this into a circus. You can hear the man video taping in the background "she is just a little girl." No, she was a straight up B with attitude, fighting with police, and cursing like a sailor. That is not a little girl.

Self-entitled trash is what she is. Just adding to the stereotype that hardworking African Americans are trying to get rid of.

How does that work? Because all African Americans are the same and some random girl in the Metro station represents all of them?

No but if the entire country continues to see AA's disrespect police and have people videotaping saying "she is only a little girl" after she jumped the turnstile, eating, cursing, and fighting, then you are enabling others to increase this attitude and it is becoming harder and harder for everyone (cops and civilians) to not regard race into their decisions. AA's like this girl are making BLM worse and the fact someone video tapes it to show she was wronged and not just a B, is even worse.

Your ignorance is so astounding it's unbelievable. I see a lot of white people acting crazy on youtube, so now I regard all white people as lunatics.
You realize your point is asinine, don't you?

How many of the outraged people have ever ridden the metro, early afternoon when school lets out, and been surrounded by kids making a huge mess of McDonalds in the train? And also being excessively loud, using obscenities with no regard for who is around them?

If you were subjected to this as frequently as I have been, you would be glad the Metro police were actually taking action for once.

That being said - for real? Just put the food in your back pack and keep moving. To be frank, most middle class+ black folks tell their children very early on: follow the rules. It doesn't matter WHO you see breaking the rules, because when the police show up, YOU are the first person that gets arrested/detained/spoken to. This is a perfect example of that, and (I hope) she learned a hard lesson.

The transit officer DID give her a chance to actually put the food away, so she has no sympathy from me there. However, the transit officer over-reacted about potato chips.

You're right- - - you are TOTALLY GUESSING!! And with racially prejudiced attitudes. Good luck with raising racially healthy kids in your house.

I've asked twice to put away food in the metro. The first time I was in college and on my way to work waiting on a platform (eating somewhat messy food but don't remember exactly what). The second time was when I was 35 (was feeling sick and started eating kids' goldfish). That's twice out of the probably 5-6 times I've tried to eat on metro over the past decades. Each time, I was embarrassed, new I had done something wrong and against the rules, throughout the food immediately, and apologized. I am a white woman.

I know, but SHE hasn't seen that. She lives in a completely different world than you and I do. She feels like she is being picked on/singled out unfairly, versus seeing it as she just got caught not following the rules. As I stated, just follow the rules! She had a chance to put the stuff away and got combative instead.

Plus her nasty attitude is mostly like enabled by her friends, family and BLM. My kids attended a school with a very high percentage of minorities and some of the attitudes are interesting, shall we say. For example, AA kid gets a paper handed back with a bad grade and hollers "you're racist!" at the teacher. It's really sad. Quite eye opening. Those whose kids only attend privates or majority white schools have no idea what many of these children are like.

Are you a teacher otherwise how do you know this to be true? Your lying a** white kids?

Stupid rule, but nobody is forcing anyone to use Metro. Comply with regulations, or deal with the consequences. The police didn't seem like they were using excessive force or other inappropriate tactics. Even pointless regulations are enforceable. Follow the rules or deal with the consequences.

That said -- really, don't the police have more important things to spend their time dealing with?

I mean, I think an argument can certainly be made for decriminalizing the behavior but I think that if it is unlawful to eat in the metro, and police officers are responsible for enforcing that law, you can't really just let people refuse to stop eating when you ask them to.

The rule is enforced to keep cockroaches, rats, mice and other animals out of Metro. And also because it is filthy and disgusting and makes a mess.

Please post all the crazy white teens refusing to put down guns, act out, cursing, disobeying the rules, and throwing a fit like this lunatic did against police. Every episode I see of teens in school with police officers, they are black. Sorry it is that way. Media loves it and the culture is continuing down that path.

Let me ask you, is this girl acting this way because of racism or is there racism because of girls like her?

He was referencing the increased security checks when the terrorism alert is increased.

I'm a black female, and I'm sick and tired of our race saying, "Yeah but white people..." at every turn, as if the black community does not have some very REAL and serious issues. Unfortunately, they will not be addressed as long as we play victim and refuse to acknowledge it. The PP has a point. Her behavior does make the race look bad and it does support stereotypes. Sure teens of other races can be ridiculous assholes, but her behavior is sadly typical of what I saw as a teacher in DCPS (and the reason I left). Let's not pretend otherwise.

I'm a former DC teacher, and that's exactly how those kids act. Actually, they're worse. You know it, and I know it. The behavior is taught by family and enabled by the adults in the system who excuse it. I sat in several trainings about how I should expect that type of behavior, the reasons for it, and ways to hopefully combat it. We're advised to befriend the kid. Understand his angst and feel sorry about all he must be going through when he defies, threatens and cusses you out. The kids are horrible and the enabling makes it worse. Several teachers have left DC schools with PTSD after dealing with being harrassed and verbally assaulted by those kids day in and out. Principals will say, "They just can't hack it here", further enabling and overlooking the student's behavior. So no, white kids are not lying on innocent black children. The behavior she exhibited in that video is TYPICAL of many DC teens. Ask any DC teacher. They see that behavior every single day. Unless they're at Banneker or a handful of other magnet schools.

Make the trains work and stop the severe crimes. I do think that the broken window theory works so these small crimes enable larger ones - they just need to get the big stuff right as well.

OP - here, after watching the video a couple more time, I really do think they did the best they could with a poorly behaved child and a hostile audience. She could have put the food in her backpack and if it was illegal entry and explain she was a DCPS student and did not have her dc one card (if that was the reason why she tries to get in without paying). The metro is free for DCPS students.
