The point about discretion may be true generally, but I don't think it's true when it comes to eating in the metro. When officers see someone eating in the metro, they have the exact same response 100% of the time. They ask the person to throw the food out, put it away, or leave the metro system. It's not like when an officer decides if he's going to stop someone going 10 miles over the speed limit, ticket them or let them go with a warning. I don't think the officers have any discretion to just ignore someone eating in metro. (They may have discretion over how many times they'll ask the person to put it away before issuing a fine -- I've heard some officers won't ask -- they'll just issue the citation. Here, it seems like if any discretion was exercised, it was in the girl's favor, as they asked her repeatedly to put it away or leave metro.) It's also a little unclear to me whether the officers are allowed to issue a written citation to a minor (if she is a minor -- there have been conflicting reports). I remember with the French fry case 15 years ago, the officers said they were in sort of a catch-22, as they weren't allowed to issue paper citations to minors (because they probably just throw them out), so they have to bring them in and contact their parents. |
| People, she was under arrest for UNLAWFUL ENTRY into the system. She was STEALING. The police just asked her to get rid of the chips and she didn't comply. She was not being arrested because of the chips. Given her failure to comply with the officers' requests, I see nothing wrong with how they responded to her. |
The headline obviously doesn't support this, but the text of the article states her arrest was for unlawful entry. |
Girl just needed to put the food away. She deserves what she got for being belligerent. |
| This is a darn shame. This is getting out of hand. Now we (the black community), thinks that we can stand up for every little thing against police officers, even if we are in the wrong. She went into the metro without paying. Not only that but she began to eat. On top of that, she refused to give out information on who she was, such as a name. The officers tried multiple times to allow her to put the food away and to leave. She refused. A disgrace. |
We, the f*** who??? This girl doesn't have anything to do with me or any of the black people I know or am related to! She makes you think you can say and do anything, since you are "we"!! Bye Felecia! |
Are we talking about those useless Metro police, who stand by while crimes occur? |
| I told my white 15 year old who is a daily Metro rider about this story. He said, were they black or a teenager? I said both. He said whenever security is increased at Union Station for bag searches they always target teenagers and black people. |
+1 |
They target whoever they get "informed" about. You might want to share that with young sherlock. |
You cannot dis her or his experience if u were not there. You do not know but you are still willing to argue. That's what causes even more issues. |
I am white and never eat on train. I know it is the rule. Actually. I did it once. Was about to pass out, hypoglycemic. Was mortified though and terrified of getting caught. Though I was clearly sick. If someone makes a reasonable request to follow a clear rule. Follow it |
Because they are the ones doing the crimes. Statistics do not lie. Do you think they should stop the 60yr old Jewish lawyer instead?
|
No but if the entire country continues to see AA's disrespect police and have people videotaping saying "she is only a little girl" after she jumped the turnstile, eating, cursing, and fighting, then you are enabling others to increase this attitude and it is becoming harder and harder for everyone (cops and civilians) to not regard race into their decisions. AA's like this girl are making BLM worse and the fact someone video tapes it to show she was wronged and not just a B, is even worse. |
Shhhh, that would ruin the outrage of the girl getting "manhandled by police for just a lollipop!!" It doesn't stir everyone up like the media wants. |
