Ohio is the epicenter of Weirdos, druggies, or just plain bizarre behavior. Run far, far away from the state. We are in the process of interviewing out of this shithole. I would never send my kid to any OH school.

I'm from Lorain and I've never smoked or used a drug, nor am I a weirdo who exhibits bizarre behavior. Shockingly, I've lived on the most exclusive blocks in NYC and Boston and have lived amongst some very high profile neighbors. It's funny because I was told DC was a cesspool. Since I moved here, I've been called privileged, put together and spoiled for no reason. I would definitely never describe myself that way and I cannot understand what leads others to that conclusion.

Don't rule out Ohio based on the above opinion.

+1

My DC is a very, very happy student at one of the Ohio SLACs. I am completely sold on it.

I used to live in Lorain and agree it's a rough town. Former steel town. On the lake, which is nice. But gritty.

Not sure what the heck this has to do with a discussion of colleges, though. There's no college in Lorain, except the Lorain County Community College (and that might be closer to Elyria). Oberlin is in Lorain County, though.

Ohio is a shitty state, that is true, but Oberlin and Kenyon are good schools. Denison, Miami, U of Dayton and Wooster are probably no better or worse than any other school in a comparable tier. Miami had a recent death of a freshman girl who drank herself to death, it can happen on any campus but it did highlight the dangers of a "dry" campus. Some of the OH schools have a very strong Greek presence which may or may not appeal to you.

Does Case Western Reserve have a good reputation?

Kenyon is a solid school. Preppy vibe on the outside, more diversity than you'd imagine on the inside. Still quite white, dominated by East Coast private school grads and UMC midwestern private/public school grads. Has its fair share of students genuinely interested in academia.

Denison is a step down from Kenyon. Ohio Wesleyan is a step down from Denison. Kenyon-Denison-OW have more similar than dissimilar student vibes.

Yes, I'm an East Coast elitist snob, but certainly learning the error of my ways. For those in the know, please let me know of your impressions of Oberlin, Kenyon, Denison, Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan...did I miss any? Is there a stereotypical student at each one?

Thanks for input! What about Miami in Oxford? Where does that fit in. In terms of vibe, heard its very preppy?

My DD has been accepted there with a good chunk of change. We will be visiting in the next couple weeks. In terms of size, it is about the same as William & Mary, to which DD appled but was rejected. I am hoping she will like whichever school in the end she decides to attend.

Congratulations to your DD. I am surprised she received merit aid at Miami, but was rejected from W and M. Are you non-va residents?

Why?

Is Kenyon predominately a jock and preppy school? I know a large percentage of students play a varsity sport and I've read that average HHI for families of students is very high. All the Kenyon grads I know, however, albeit grads from more than 20 years ago, are pretty bookish and nerdy.

Great in fact.

We visited and it seemed like a mix. My DD's friend who went there was an artsy creative type but another girl from her school went to play field hockey and was more of an athlete. It's a great school (and I personally loved it) but the town is pretty much non existent, which is why my DD chose Oberlin. Of course that's a small town too but it has a lot more going on than Gambier.

Fantastic for STEM. Has research co-ops with Cleveland Clinic. Great engineering school.

USNWR ranks Miami something like 75. In the same tier as Virginia Tech. Certainly well within the tippy top of American universities.

Can someone rank the Ohio schools in terms of preppiness?

At my "Big 3", Miami of Ohio has gotten very hot. Lots of merit aid too.

Miami is very pretty and has a large fraternity culture but Oxford is a cute town. Kenyon and Denison are nice schools but fairly rural. Kenyon is gorgeous. You could also look at Earlham, Butler and Hanover in Indiana for smaller schools.

Denison is in a small village but just a half-hour from Columbus.

Kenyon is much more isolated.
