Liberal Arts Schools in Ohio

Ohio itself is a cesspool. Moved to Cinci a year ago from DC, work has me making the circuit from here to Toledo, Youngstown, Lorain, Columbus and Cleveland. Ohio is the epicenter of Weirdos, druggies, or just plain bizarre behavior. Run far, far away from the state. We are in the process of interviewing out of this shithole. I would never send my kid to any OH school.

Good to know you won't be in Ohio while my DC is in school there.

Tell you kid to stay clear of the rapists, kidnappers, sex offenders, murderers, methheads, heroin junkies and other freaks that congregate here. It's to the point when we see bizarre headlines, DH and I try to guess which part of Ohio. We've learned that greater Cleveland is often a good bet.

Any one want to try to rank the above mentioned schools in terms of name brand recognition?

Why does it matter?

Is there one you're interested in? They are fairly different and we visited most last year with my senior who will attend Oberlin next fall. The rank is less important than the fit. Oberlin is the highest ranked but it's not for everyone - what is your child looking for?

Kenyon is a solid school. Preppy vibe on the outside, more diversity than you'd imagine on the inside. Still quite white, dominated by East Coast private school grads and UMC midwestern private/public school grads. Has its fair share of students genuinely interested in academia.

Denison is a step down from Kenyon. Ohio Wesleyan is a step down from Denison. Kenyon-Denison-OW have more similar than dissimilar student vibes.

Yes, I'm an East Coast elitist snob, but certainly learning the error of my ways. For those in the know, please let me know of your impressions of Oberlin, Kenyon, Denison, Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan...did I miss any? Is there a stereotypical student at each one?

Thanks for input! What about Miami in Oxford? Where does that fit in. In terms of vibe, heard its very preppy?

My DD has been accepted there with a good chunk of change. We will be visiting in the next couple weeks. In terms of size, it is about the same as William & Mary, to which DD appled but was rejected. I am hoping she will like whichever school in the end she decides to attend.

Congratulations to your DD. I am surprised she received merit aid at Miami, but was rejected from W and M. Are you non-va residents?

Otterbein has an excellent theater program.

I am a Miami graduate and it is a fine school. However, it has a real bad problem with alcohol culture and sexual assault. It seems like it's gotten really bad in the last few years -- more of an issue than at other schools.

No, Virginia residents.

Tough but fair. Boring state, but if you're making coin in Columbus or Cincinnati, you can live in a prime suburb with a Whole Foods and elite day school, afford a summer home in Traverse City (MI), and a retirement home in Florida.

The two finest small private LACs in the Midwest are Kenyon (OH) and Hillsdale (MI).

DePauw is very good also.

I'm from Lorain and I've never smoked or used a drug, nor am I a weirdo who exhibits bizarre behavior. Shockingly, I've lived on the most exclusive blocks in NYC and Boston and have lived amongst some very high profile neighbors. It's funny because I was told DC was a cesspool. Since I moved here, I've been called privileged, put together and spoiled for no reason. I would definitely never describe myself that way and I cannot understand what leads others to that conclusion.

Don't rule out Ohio based on the above opinion.
