Do you steal when you go thru self-checkout?

The grocery store by my job took out self check out because people were stealing so much. They also refuse to get more hand baskets because they are stolen so often. The likes are so slow! Ugh.

I got an organic avocado once and punched in the code for a regular one. Mostly an honest mistake but I probably could have flagged down the attendant to fix it (I didn't). Other than that, no!

Wow. It's never even crossed my mind.

Never. I don't steal. I know, even if other people don't.

+ 1. I hate the GD self checkouts.

No, but I can afford not to. I suppose some people can't.

No.!!!!

I feel like if I do bad, bad will come back my way.

Some call it karma. But this is biblical too. So it scares me to steal. When a cashier misses something, I point it out.

No. I am not a thief.

No idea why. One employee told me it's because my purchases vary so much from $20 one trip to $200 the next.

Either way, I'm pretty careful b/c it would be so embarrassing to get busted, even if it was an accident.

Same! And I'm always paranoid something was accidentally not scanned.

A few months ago someone at Sam's Club walked out with 6 big screen tvs. Went to the self checkout but forgot to ring it up. They got stopped in the parking lot so now when you self check it has to be double checked by the clerk standing there and near the exit.

Last week someone tried to steal meat from the local grocer so now every receipt is checked when you leave.

I never use the self checkout. I always have too much in my cart. Last week the manager called me over to the self checkout and did my whole purchase. That was very nice of her.

But steal ? No. Not even if I were starving. It's not worth going to jail.

Anonymous wrote:No. However, apparently people often do. I had one time that despite the message on the screen that asked if I had anything under my cart, I didn't check because I knew I didn't have anything under there. Then I got out to my car and while loading the trunk...found something under the cart. I finished unloading and then had to take the item back in and go to the service desk to pay for it. The people at the service desk and the other person in line looked at me like I was some lunatic and couldn't believe that I walked an item back in to pay for it. I still think what I did was normal, but apparently others don't think so.

Too many people do not have morals now a days, that is why the employees are shocked. I suspect you have a 24 pack of water, or multiple 12 packs of soda, or dog/cat food, and it makes sense to have those underneath the cart.

NO. Why would a person who has money take the risk of getting caught stealing limes or bread or whatever?
I could see if I were desperately poor.
Anonymous
No because it never occurred to me. Also no because my self checkout always involves me needing a store employee for one reason or another.

Well the main reason I'm glad to see this is that maybe it'll start costing the stores more to have self-checkout and so then they'll actually have EMPLOYEES at the checkouts to resolve problems. It drives me nuts when there isn't a dedicated staff member to the self-checkouts. There are ALWAYS issues. Super annoying. If you are only going to have 1 other check out line open, make sure someone is helping at self check out! Sheesh.

I don't do self checkout if I have a cart full of stuff. So no, and I've never forgotten to ring something up since I'm not buying that much when I use it.
