[quoteAs a side note - as a young teacher, my husband and I struggled to make ends meet in the DC area. We pinched pennies, worked hard, I took on summer jobs - it was tough. I had students who were getting free lunch who had nicer clothes, very expensive shoes (brand name tennis shoes - think Michael Jordan), the newest electronic games, etc. These were items that their parents bought them (the kids were proud of the fact that their parents got them pretty much everything they wanted).
Veteran teacher here. Sometimes the kids are not getting the things they need. Sometimes a few expensive items are bought to try to make up for what they don't have (which is often an absent parent or not spending time with the child). Children, unfortunately, might have these material wants taken care of, but their physical and emotional needs are not taken care of. Parents, unfortunately, do not exercise good judgement . . . they don't know how to parent. This is the true poverty. This is not the fault of the child. Also, you and your husband were on a ladder up. You should be grateful.
