After multiple prestigious universities beginning their talk with..."...we don't offer merit aid", he was stunned to hear the multiple scholarship grants for merit granted exceptional high school kids. Applied to all the big leagues and will hear in March, but as a non-single early action U Miami has already come back to him and offered a presidential scholarship of $25K a year to double major -- it may not be so difficult to turn down a prestigious school when U Miami is pouring money into attracting the best and brightest. This place is up and coming. Looking forward to the (sigh) visit for new admits in Feb, then a tour of the new Rosenstiel Center on Key Biscayne!

Even with 25k, it's still high. DC turned down the Singer Scholarship for a full ride at UMD.

Shocked a kid would turn down Miami for Umd really?

What is so shocking? Tuition at Miami is pushing 60k. Even with 25k scholarship it is not that much better that UMD.

Much more prestigious look at alum and endowment and current stats- would not compare the two

Only to Umiami alum or parents

Facts are not on your side.

Sorry, I meant that facts are not on the side of the UMiami is better poster.

They are actually extremely comparable schools. Like, nearly identical!
#51 USNWR for UMiami, #57 Maryland
887 million endowment for UMiami, 850 million endowment for Maryland
4.0 average HS GPA for UMiami, 4.22 for Maryland
1200-1390 SAT average for UMiami, 1210-1420 for Maryland

^ thank you. That makes more sense.

Fact: Coral Gables infinitely better than College Park.

That would be the first thought to cross the mind of a hiring manager.

Yeah, come on. I'd love my kid to be nearby in U Md, but honestly Miami will be downright exotic after DC for life. That said, March may bring good news from "name" schools like Columbia, Carnegie M etc... yet still may go with the U.

Certainly was! (Having done both).

This thread has me concerned - anyone know how tough it is for legacy admissions? Now I'm wondering if my DD could even get accepted as a legacy down the road if she's only an average student.

Who the hell wants to go to college in that "every freaky thing that happens in the US, happens here" state? Florida is a place to vacation. And then get the hell out.

Hopefully, your DC is going there to study...

I expected that as well, but was surprised when I arrived as a freshman that there was little to do on and around campus if you didn't have a car. Plus I didn't realize how much of a commuter school it was. This was 15 years ago, so things may have changed a lot since then. I ended up transferring to UMD and liked it so much better. I wish I had gone there from the start.

^^yeah a lot can change for a college in 15 years. For example in that time Donna Shalala succeeded in her efforts to bring the school's reputation and rank up to the top 50. But as far as the campus, it's always been beautiful so I'd say perhaps the biggest changes would be that Coral Gables has really built up around the U and now Uber is ubiquitous and easier than having a car. Something I've never heard from recent or current U students is that there's "nothing to do." In fact, I'd say it's the opposite.

Check current admitted stats they have gone up significantly. Not an easy school, 3 got waitlisted 2 got in and 3 rejected in my D's class recently. Once you get to a top 50 school...there are very few "certainties".

Anyone going to early admit visit next weekend?

We'll be there the following weekend to visit DD for the first part of spring break. The U has been absolutely perfect for her--it was definitely a "I'll know it when I see it" school in our experience.
