Is University of Miami that hard to get into?

49% white for any college cannot be called something other than diverse.

UF is harder to get into and more challenging.

For a non-Floridian, yes, UF is probably harder to get into. But "more challenging"? What a ridiculous comment without any context. But sure I'll give you that Engineering at UF is more challenging than Marketing at Miami. People say the darnedest things.

It's not that far off, to be honest; at least for undergraduate greek life.

In Florida, the U of Miami is widely perceived as a school for rich kids from out-of-state (typically the Northeast) who drive BMWs, wear designer clothing, pop oxycodone and/or cocaine and move back to New Jersey upon graduation.

Actual Floridians go to UF, FSU, UCF or USF.

I don't know about your drugs-related comment, but I agree about the out-of-state population--probably about 3/4 are non from Florida.

My sister's best friend went there. Now my sister and her friend were not innocent types but her friend was like a kid at a candy store when she got to miami. Awash in molly, horse, coke, oxy. It is a very fast school that even party kids from the north east who get 'faded' find it insane with respect to the drug culture.

What a silly and ignorant comment- you just described every college in America a dear with The exception of most of the Mormon schools!! Nephew is at Dartmouth and he tells the stories all the time that the insane drug use there.......no different than Miami!

Miami is certainly not the only school with drug problems, but it has a reputation for being worse than most.

It's just the combination of an unusually large perecentage of out of state, very affluent students away from home in a tropical paradise, South Florida club/party culture, yachts, Miami being a major gateway for drug traffic, etc.

Most students at your typical big state school simply can't afford, or have access to, the stuff that the kids at Miami do.

Despite your data point of your sister's friend 4 years ago, I'll disagree with your conclusion of the rampant drug use. My DD is currently a student at Miami. She's seen and heard about much more drug use from other friends at other colleges. So I'll go with my current data points. The girls DD knows spend their $$ on clothes and accessories. Overall she says the students are very smart (her freshman year, all 8 of her suitemates had high school GPAs over 4.2) talented and motivated to find a good job after college. But believe what you will.

dartmouth? you are kidding - the only ivy that can even begin to be in miami's class when it comes to drug culture is Penn. And it still isn't even close.

^^Maybe things change over a decade or two? Maybe your perception is wrong? Maybe UF just wants it to be true? All kinds of possibilities.

NO not kidding. 7 of his frat brothers were either suspended or expelled and all in one semester. Cocaine runs like water there, don't kid yourself buddy.

U Miami for some reason has gotten very difficult to get into-when a kid with a nearly 2100 gets wait listed for spring really makes me nervous as a parent of a kid who did not score as high but overall has a stellar record.

Np. I was a Floridian. UF was much harder to get into. It's law school is better ranked and I believe the undergraduate coursework is more challenging.

In my D's school Miami is considered to be much more prestigious than UF.

Acceptance rates for 2015 (according to US New and World report)
U of Miami 38%
UF 47%

humm.......

You immediately lose any credibility by posting acceptance rates as sole the measure of selectivity.

Early action results are in. Worked out for DD with OK stats, and hopefully for the OP's child, too!
