Is University of Miami that hard to get into?

Do you know if scholarship winners can request to room with an other merit scholar? My DC does not know anyone but is concerned that he could get assigned a roommate who is more social and less serious about studying. I am not saying this to brag. he didn't get this attitude form me. He drives himself and often studies until midnight or even later.

Does your kid have a Facebook? Just have him search "University of Miami Class of 2020" and the page is mostly kids mostly "profiles" of themselves, ie "I'm John from Timbuktu, Mali and I plan to study bowling alley management. I'm a morning person and not a huge partier." From there, your kid can message others that seem like a good fit (or post about himself), and they'll get to talking to see if they should go ahead and room together.

Also, don't necessarily think that kids who get merit scholarships aren't partiers, or vice versa. There are tons of "work hard play hard types" in college.

Even if only half the invited kids accept this should boost their ranking in coming years. I think Rice, Duke and Tulane are also using this approach. I am very interested what my DC will think after the upcoming weekend for merit scholars. its is a hard choice, but the idea of not having to worry about college loans is very attractive.

Can you please explain what you mean by Duke and Rice using this approach? Are they offering merit $$ to students off just scores?

Not just on scores. They consider grades, and EC, as well as
URM status. But they do focus on scores for their full tuition scholarships as does U of Miami because these help boost their rankings.

Yes, this. The kids all check each other out on fb and ask questions to select roommates they think are best suited for them.

Cane Day was pretty impressive, about 70% of the students have been offered merit $, usually a good amount. The staff was very accessible, knowledgeable and serious about the work they are doing. Very organized, welcoming and every single student we interacted with was friendly and ready to help families learn more about the university. If your kid got in and you didn't attend, there will be another "Cane Day" in April or May, definitely try and go.

My DC is going to a special cane weekend for particular scholarship winners on spring break. Can you please give me some feedback from your experience. Are there separate activities for parents and students? Were you able just o speak to any professors in your kids major? Any tips to make the trip more valuable? My son has several offers from other more prestigious schools but the full ride from Miami is the the best so far. We are waiting to hear from some ivies and top Slacs. He is a URM with very high test scores. He would like to go to a big name law school. If he does very well at Miami is this a possibility

These are my concerns, as well, congrats on the big scholarship!! We met more than a few students who also turned down Ivies to go here and we're very happy with their decisions, many studying medicine, sciences, engineering beyond the usual business and communications majors. We also will hear from big name schools in the coming weeks, and it may be tough to pay all that money when Miami is so cleverly recruiting more and more of the brightest and best with merit $$. We toured the new Rosenstiel Center on Key Biscaybe and it was pretty amazing. Students at Cane Day talked about the small class sizes, the numerous opportunities with internships study abroad and great access and connections to jobs from the start. The new President, Julio Frenk is also a transformational leader who came from 7 years as Harvards Dean of Faculty of Public Health and worked on their international development. You will find the weekend immeasurably worthwhile and enjoyable.

Great! Thanks for the feedback. We are looking forward to it!

There is most definitely a very elite group of students there, we were there 2 weekends ago and were extremely impressed. It has quickly shot to one of the two tops for my D.

Credit score beats SAT score. GW on the beach will never produce a Nobel or Pulitzer graduate.

62.000 per year is not expensive?
