Is University of Miami that hard to get into?

Maybe the Stamp (tuition, room, and board) or one of URM scholarships.

Full ride means tuition is free in this case. He also got a good offer from UMCP and is waiting to hear from other universities, with better academic reputations, and we will have to way all the offers. But its exciting to know we will be able to afford to send him to university. He worked so hard in high school. I am happy for him.

^ UMCP offer has not gone out either.

To answer your question, he feels very happy and can now relax about the other decisions coming this spring. He loved the campus when we visited. The student who showed us around did a great job and we felt like he would fit in. He feels he can be happy there academically and likes the proximity to Latin America and the internships available with international companies that have their Latin American hdqtrs. in Miami. We liked the diversity on campus, he liked the food choices and the big outdoor swimming pool. He is a swimmer. We are FA recipients at a Big 3 and he knows money is tight so this is a great option.

To the naysayer above, UMCP decisions are out and he was accepted to the Honors program. No financial aid offer extended yet, but since we are in state, it is not as important.

I don't understand the post above. You don't get money if decline the scholarship.

I referred congrats to the poster who said their kid gets a full ride merit scholarship to the U of M. My kid has been offered the $25K Presidential Scholarship for each year for 4 years. That's what I meant.

After multiple prestigious universities beginning their talk with..."...we don't offer merit aid", he was stunned to hear the multiple scholarship grants for merit granted exceptional high school kids. Applied to all the big leagues and will hear in March, but as a non-single early action U Miami has already come back to him and offered a presidential scholarship of $25K a year to double major -- it may not be so difficult to turn down a prestigious school when U Miami is pouring money into attracting the best and brightest. This place is up and coming. Looking forward to the (sigh) visit for new admits in Feb, then a tour of the new Rosenstiel Center on Key Biscayne!

Even with 25k, it's still high. DC turned down the Singer Scholarship for a full ride at UMD.

Shocked a kid would turn down Miami for Umd really?

What is so shocking? Tuition at Miami is pushing 60k. Even with 25k scholarship it is not that much better that UMD.

Much more prestigious look at alum and endowment and current stats- would not compare the two
