Would you marry someone foreign?

Anonymous
No, I would not.

I married a foreigner and so did my best friend. We realized in retrospect that there were things that he did, that his family did, that his mom did that we were both way too generous in excusing because of the whole foreign factor.

In other words, his mother would say something unconscionably cruel and we would say, "Oh, this must be a translation problem. She couldn't possibly have meant that. I'm probably just misunderstanding because she's foreign."

Same with the guy from time to time -- Something like insisting on everything being returned to exactly the same place that it came from in the kitchen, and the girlfriend thinking it must be 'some foreign thing' when it's really OCD.

Don't overlook things -- his fascist politics; his incredibly cheapness and lack of generosity; his mom's rigidly controlling ways -- or even worse, romanticize them, because, you know, he's foreign. Don't assume that as he acclimates to life in the US, he will change.

Basically, don't overlook piggy things that you wouldn't accept in another relationship because the guy's foreign, or chalk everything up to foreignness. Look out for the same signs and warning signals that you would look out for in a regular relationship and treat them the same way.

Great advice. Thanks.

I would marry a Northern European man because I generally find them to be less chauvinistic than American men. I also find them to be hotter physically and better conversationalists.

There is that whole hygiene thing to consider however. No one is as clean as those Americans! Can't imagine marrying a guy who showers every other day, doesn't wear deodorant, doesn't wash his clothes very often. And Americans have great teeth. There is that.

What? Don't generalize!

UMmm...you do realize that the whole world outside the US is a very big, diverse place, right?

- American woman happily married to Northern European man with two trilingual kids

How is that a relevant comeback to previous PP's comment? Defensive much?

Go post on a California forum. And if you don't like Americans, how about going back home while you're at it?

Seriously. What a loser.

Several things i found very common is that a good number of them were not very good at give and take in conservation, talked mostly about themselves, and were not very inquisitive. Many also thought they could talk a girl into having sex, a very strange idea. I did end up marrying an American, but he was working in my country at the time, had adjusted a bit, and we have stayed together here for along time. He wasn't so bad and he has gotten better. What more can a girl hope for?

Ha this is hysterically true! American men are usually AWFUL at conversation. I think American women tend to do the heavy lifting for them...

Same here! Is your spouse Australian too?
