School not allowing access to water in hot weather

I am sorry if this really happened but I find it hard to believe that teachers and multiple parents would sit back if a child was in danger. There is more to this story and it sounds to me like another teacher bashing gone wild.

Too much hassle, I imagine, plus having the kids carry the bottles around, lose the bottles. Really, they should plan a water fountain/snack break midway through the outing.

If the kids carry water bottles, then they'd have to have a bathroom break. Perhaps 2 or 3 breaks. At Mt Vernon and on the bus? I can see why the teacher, who does the same trip the same way every year, has figured out all these things.

I was a teacher and did this field trip, and we had water bottles and even found a way to get them a snack. It wasn't that hard, and I did it with special needs kids.

If that's the only way to do the trip, then I would argue they should find another trip.

If a teacher can't handle a group of kids needing to have a bathroom break, she's in the wrong line of work.

You've just described about half of all teachers.

I think we may not have all the details. And, remember, not every school is within a thirty minute bus ride. Some area schools may be an hour away. I find it hard to believe a teacher would not provide a bathroom break. There are also schedules to follow--the bus driver has to be back.

I cannot believe the teacher provided no break. If that is the case, then that is a problem.

Don't you mean "kids with special needs", Teach?

Our school doesn't have usable water fountains. We do run out of cups for the water coolers sometimes so if students don't save their cups like they are told or if they don't bring in water bottles from home, they can't get water. Parents constantly complain that their child wasn't allowed to get water but yet they won't send in a cup or water bottle. Their child also doesn't follow directions to save their cup in the top of their locker. You just can't win sometimes.

And if it is true they're pretty crappy people. Seriously, this kid was passed out long enough to be moving her unconscious body around and no one stepped in?

No, she wasn't unconscious for more than a moment. The teacher sent her to the nurse. I don't think people were afraid exactly. I don't understand why the parents think this stuff is OK. They seem to accept it and just shrug it off. I did speak with the parent. She took her to the doctor or clinic or something later that day, but the kid was OK. The parent just didn't seem all that concerned. I don't get it. The parents are not afraid - they just seem to think it's not their place to say anything. The vibe in this school is just weird. Parents never complain about anything. One of my friends' kids has peed or pooped in his pants about once a week for most of the school year because the teacher won't let him use the bathroom without asking and he is too embarrassed to ask. My friend, who is otherwise a normal person, gets angry at her son for not just getting up and going to the bathroom, but won't even speak to the teacher about it. And she is not afraid of the teacher, either. I keep asking why she doesn't speak to the school, but she just doesn't seem to think that's the solution. The parent complacency makes me want to scream. But I can't be the squeaky wheel - that's already caused my child and me a lot of problems.

Um, YOU were one of those jackass parents who let it go, OP!! You are no better.

It is federal law for a school to have water available, and it is not dependent on the student supplying their own cup or bottle. I'd love to know what school this is. I don't blame the parents for complaining. Your school basically sucks if you can't meet students' most basic needs.

Yes, it does suck a lot of the time. I agree with that statement. We also run out of paper towels, occasionally toilet paper. We usually run out of other things that teachers pay for- pencils, copy paper, glue sticks, etc etc etc. I don't think parents in wealthy school districts have any idea how good their children have it.

If this is true, it's your duty to share the name, bring attention to this matter. That is the only way change happens.
